There are bobbles galore on this design by Sue Rawlinson, which circle the hat until they reach the proud pompom on top

■ ▼est Yorkshire Spinners Jacobs DK (100% wool, 100g/225m), 1 ball of each: Ecru (001), Light Grey (005), Medium Grey (006), Brown/ Black (007)

■ A 4mm (US G/6) hook

■ An 85mm pompom maker

TENSION

Tension is not critical for this project, but it may affect the yarn quantities required

MEASUREMEN­TS

Hat measures 50cm (19 in) in circumfere­nce

NOTES

Hat is worked flat, then sewn together.

All bobble rows are worked on the wrong side. The hat can be worn slouchy or, for a more fitted look, the rib can be folded over.

BOBBLE HAT RIB BRIM

Using Light Grey, ch16.

Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from the hook and each ch across, turn. [15 sts]

Row 2 (WS) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in bl of each st across, turn.

Rows 3-80 Repeat Row 2.

Do not fasten off.

CROWN Row 1 (RS) Turn to work into row-ends, ch1, dc in each row-end across, turn. [80 sts] Fasten off. Row 2 (WS) Join Ecru in first st, ch1, dc in each st across, turn.

Rows 3-5 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn. [80 sts] Fasten off. Row 6 (WS) Join Medium Grey in first st, ch1, dc in first 2 sts, (5-tr clin next st, dc in each of next 4 sts) across to last 3 sts, 5-tr cl in next st, dc in last 2 sts, turn.

Row 7 Repeat Row 2. Fasten off.

Row 8 Join Brown/Black in first st, ch1, dc in first st, (5-tr clin next st, dc in next st, 5-tr clin next st, dc in each of next 2 sts) across to last 4 sts, (5-tr clin next st, dc in next st) twice, turn.

Row 9 Repeat Row 2. Fasten off. Rows 10-11 Repeat Rows 6-7 using Ecru. Rows 12-15 Repeat Rows 2-5 using Light Grey. Row 16 Join Brown/Black in first st, ch1, dc in first st, (5-tr clin next st, dc in next 2 sts) across to last 4 sts, (5-tr clin next st, dc in next st) twice, turn.

Row 17 Repeat Row 2. Fasten off. Rows 18-21 Repeat Rows 2-5 using Medium

Grey. Rows 22-23 Repeat Rows 6-7 using Ecru. Rows 24-25 Repeat Rows 8-9 using Light Grey. Rows 26-29 Repeat Rows 2-5 using Brown/

Black.

Row 30 Join Medium Grey in first st, ch1, dc in each st across, turn.

Rows 31-36, Ch1, dc in each st across, turn, fasten off after Row 5.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. TO MAKE UP

With RS together, using the long yarn tail, sew the side seams together and weave in all ends. Using a strong thread, weave through all stitches of Round 36 and pull tight to gather top of Hat. Sew several stitches back and forward through the gathered top of the Hat to keep it tightly closed and secure.

Using Light Grey and Ecru together, make a large pompom to sew to the top.
