Treat your feet to zesty stripes and amazing zig-zags!

You’ll have the happiest feet around in these funky striped socks. The yarn does all the hard work of creating the stripes for you, so you’re free to enjoy working the stylish zig-zag lace pattern. Give them a whirl!

Zig-zag pattern

Multiple of 9 sts.

Round 1 and all alt rounds Knit. Round 2 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, k2tog, K3, yo; repeat to end.

Round 4 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, k2tog, K3, yo; repeat to end.

Round 6 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, k2tog, K3, yo; repeat to end.

Round 8 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, k2tog, K3, yo; repeat to end.

Round 10 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, k2tog, K3, yo; repeat to end.

Round 12 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, K5; repeat

to end.

Round 14 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, yo, K3, SSK; repeat to end.

Round 16 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, yo, K3, SSK; repeat to end.

Round 18 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, yo, K3, SSK; repeat to end.

Round 20 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, yo, K3, SSK; repeat to end.

Round 22 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, yo, K3, SSK; repeat to end.

Round 24 Ssk, yo, yo, k2tog, K5; repeat

to end.

NOTE On odd-numbered rounds, work ( K1, P1) into each double-yarn over.

CUFF

Cast on 64 sts using 2½mm needle and long-tail cast on for elasticity. Join in the round, being careful not to twist.

Round 1 K2, P2; repeat to end of round. Repeat this round for a further 10 rounds.

Round 12 K2, P2; rep until 4 sts from end of rnd, K2, p2tog. [ 63 sts]

LEG

Work zig-zag pattern until the leg meas approx 15cm from cast on, finishing on round 12 or 24. Turn work to start heel.

HEEL

Row 1 Sl1 pwise, P31, turn. Row 2 ( Sl1, K1) 16 times, turn. Repeat these 2 rows 15 more times. [ 32 rows in total]

Next row Sl1 purlwise, P18, p2tog, P1,

turn. Next row Sl1, K7, ssk, K1, turn. Next row Sl1, P8, p2tog, P1, turn. Next row Sl1, K9, ssk, K1, turn. Next row Sl1, P10, p2tog, P1, turn. Continue in this way until all the sts have been used up. Resume working in rounds.

Next round Pick up 18 sts down left side of flap, place marker ( M1), knit across top of foot, place marker ( M2), then pick up 18 sts up right side of flap.

FOOT

K to M1. From now on, round begins immediatel­y after marker 1.

Dec round ( SSK, yo, yo, k2tog, K5) 3 times, SSK, yo, yo, k2tog, slip M2, K1, ssk, K to 3 sts before M1, k2tog, K1.

Straight round Knit. Repeat these two rounds until 63 sts remain, continuing in pattern as set in Dec round across top of foot – the columns of yarnovers will now run straight down the foot, instead of zig-zagging. The sole of the foot continues in stocking stitch throughout. Knit until foot measures 5cm less than the length of your foot.

SHAPE TOE

Next round K to 3 sts before end of rnd, k2tog, K1. You now have 62 sts total – 31 on top of the foot, 31 on the sole.

Dec round K1, ssk, K to 3 sts before M2, k2tog, K2 (1 st either side of M2), ssk, K to 3 sts before M1, k2tog, K1.

Straight round Knit. Repeat these rounds until 22 sts remain. Distribute these so there are 11 on each of the two needle tips, then graft using Kitchener stitch ( see page 54 for a step- by-step guide).
