Cast on 77 ( 89) sts using 7mm needles, taking extra care not to get a tight edge.

Row 1 ( RS) K5, ( P7, K5) 6 ( 7) times.

Row 2 P5, ( K7, P5) 6 ( 7) times. These 2 rows set the rib.

Rows 3- 8 Rep rows 1-2 three times.

Row 9 K5, ( P2, p3tog, P2, K5) 6 ( 7) times. [ 65 ( 75) sts]

Row 10 P5, ( K5, P5) 6 ( 7)

times.

Rows 11-16 Keeping rib

correct work six rows.

Row 17 K5, ( P1, p3tog, P1, K5) 6 ( 7) times. [ 53 ( 61) sts]

Row 18 P5, ( K3, P5) 6 ( 7)

times.

Rows 19-24 Keeping rib correct work six rows.

Row 25 K5, ( p3tog, K5)

6( 7) times. [41 ( 47) sts]

Row 26 P5, ( K1, P5) 6 ( 7)

times.

Rows 27-30 Keeping rib correct work four rows.

Row 31 K5, ( k2tog, K4) 6( 7) times. [35 ( 40) sts] Row 32 Purl. Row 33 ( On which eyelets are made for the tie) K2 ( 5), ( yfwd, k2tog, K2) 8 times, K1 ( 3). Beg with a purl row work in st st until front measures 58cm from beg, ending after a purl row. Knit 3 rows.

Cast off very loosely.

BACK

Work as front.

TO MAKE UP

With WS facing, sew up side seams. Make a twisted cord using 3 lengths of yarn, each 150cm long, twisted together. Make a knot at each end of cord and lace tie through eyelet holes in row 33.

WRIST WARMERS RIGHT WRIST WARMER

Cast on 23 ( 27) sts using 7mm needles, taking extra care not to get a tight edge.

Row 1 ( RS) K2, ( P1, K1) 5 ( 6) times, P5, ( K1, P1) 2 ( 3) times, K2.

Row 2 ( K1, P1) 3 ( 4) times, K5, ( P1, K1) 6 ( 7) times. These 2 rows set the rib. Cont in rib until work measures 16cm.

Cast off loosely in rib.

LEFT WRIST WARMER

Cast on as for right wrist warmer.

Row 1 K2, ( P1, K1) 2 ( 3) times, P5, ( K1, P1) 5 ( 6) times, K2.

Row 2 ( K1, P1) 6 ( 7) times, K5, ( P1, K1) 3 ( 4) times. Complete as right wrist warmer.

TO MAKE UP

With WS facing, sew up side seam, leaving a 5cm gap for thumb approx 8cm from cast on edge.

HAT

Cast on 65 sts using 7mm needles, taking extra care not to get a tight edge. ( Use a needle size larger to cast on if necessary.) Starting with a knit row, work in st st for 20cm ending after a knit row. Beg knit row again for RS of hat, cont in st st until work measures 28cm from beg, ending after a purl row.

SHAPE CROWN

Row 1 ( K6, k2tog) 8 times, K1. [ 57 sts]

Row 2 and every alt row

Purl.

Row 3 ( K5, k2tog) 8 times, K1. [ 49 sts]

Row 5 ( K4, k2tog) 8 times, K1. [ 41 sts] Cont in this way dec 8 sts on every knit row until 17 sts rem. Break yarn and thread onto tapestry needle. Draw through sts, pull tight and fasten securely. With WS facing, sew up seam. Fold brim over twice to RS.
