Yarn used knits as DK to this tension: 18 sts and 24 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over st st using 5mm needles

We have the solution – a simple, gansey-style sweater with easy-to-learn cable and simple-to- knit moss stitch. Use Stylecraft Jeanie yarn to create wardrobe-friendly wear for the man of your choice, especially if he’s an outdoor chap. You can whip it up in no time on generous 5mm needles too!

STITCH PATTERNS

MOSS ST Row 1 K1 (*P1, K1) repeat to end. Row 2 Work P over K and K over P.

BACK

Cast on 94 ( 102: 110: 122: 130) sts using 4 mm needles. Row 1 (RS) K2, *P2, K2; to end. Row 2 ( WS) P2, *K2, P2; to end. Rep the last 2 rows 6 times, and inc 1 ( 3:3: 1: 3) sts evenly across last row. [95 ( 105: 113: 123: 133) sts] Change to 5mm needles. Cont in st st until work measures 46cm ending with a WS row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Cast off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows. [83 ( 93: 101: 111: 121) sts] Row 1 Moss st 3 ( 8: 12: 17: 22), *P2, K1, inc in next st, K1, P2, moss st 7; rep from * ending last rep, moss st 3 ( 8: 12: 17: 22). [89 ( 99: 107: 117: 127) sts] Row 2 Moss st 3 ( 8: 12: 17: 22), *K2, P4, K2, moss st 7; rep from * ending last rep, moss st 3 ( 8: 12: 17: 22).

Row 3 Moss st 3 ( 8: 12: 17: 22), *P2, C4B, P2, moss st 7; rep from * ending last rep, moss st 3 ( 8: 12: 17: 22).

Cast off 10 ( 10: 12: 13: 14) sts at beg of next 4 rows. [49 ( 59: 59: 65: 71) sts] Cast off 8( 12: 11: 13: 15) sts at beg of next 2 rows. [33 ( 35: 37: 39: 41) sts] Leave rem 33 ( 35: 37: 39: 41) sts on a spare needle.

FRONT

Work same as Back to **. Cont in patt until 20 rows less have been worked to start of neck shaping.

SHAPE NECK

Work each side of neck separately. Next row (RS) Patt 36 ( 40: 43: 47: 51), turn and work on these sts for neck, leave rem 53 ( 59: 64: 70: 76) sts on a spare needle.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 8 alt rows. [28 ( 32: 35: 39: 43) sts] Work 4 rows in patt.

SHAPE LEFT SHOULDER

Cast off 10 ( 10: 12: 13: 14) sts at beg of next 2 RS rows. Cast off 8( 12: 11: 13: 15) sts at beg of next RS row. With RS facing slip centre 17 ( 19: 21: 23: 25) sts onto a holder and patt to end. Work on 36 ( 40: 43: 47: 51) sts on needle for right- side of neck as follows; Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 8 alt rows. [28 ( 32: 35: 39: 43) sts] Work 4 rows in patt.

SHAPE RIGHT SHOULDER

Cast off 10 ( 10: 12: 13: 14) sts at beg of next 2 RS rows. Cast off 8( 12: 11: 13: 15) sts at beg of next RS row.

SLEEVES

Cast on 42 ( 46: 50: 54: 58) sts using 4 mm needles. Row 1 (RS) K2, *P2, K2; to end. Row 2 P2, *K2, P2; to end. Rep the last 2 rows 6 times. Change to 5mm needles. Cont in st st from now on. Work 2 rows.

SHAPE SLEEVE SIDES

Inc row K2, M1, K to last 2 sts, M1, K2. [44 ( 48: 52: 56: 60) sts] Work 3 rows. Rep the last 4 rows 10 times and the inc row again. [66 ( 70: 74: 78: 82) sts] Work 5 rows. Inc row K2, M1, K to last 2 sts, M1, K2. Work 5 rows. Rep the last 6 rows 6 times and the inc row again. [82 ( 86: 90: 94: 98) sts] Cont without shaping until work measures 47cm. Mark each end of last row. Work 6 rows.

SHAPE SLEEVE TOP

Cast off 10 ( 11: 11: 12: 12) sts at the beg of the next 6 rows. [22 ( 20: 24: 22: 26) sts] Cast off rem sts.

NECKBAND

Join right shoulder seam. Using 4 mm needles, with right- side facing, pick up and knit 20 sts down Left Front Neck, knit across 17 ( 19: 21: 23: 25) sts from centre front, pick up and knit 20 sts up right front neck, knit across 33 ( 35: 37: 39: 41) sts from back neck. [90 ( 94: 98: 102: 106) sts] Row 1 (RS) K2 *P2, K2; to end. Row 2 P2 *K2, P2; to end. Rep the last 2 rows 2 times and row 1 again. Change to 5mm needles. Cont in st st from now on. Work 5 rows. Cast off.

MAKE UP

Sew left shoulder seam and neckband, reversing stitching for st st section. Join sleeve seams to markers. Sew in sleeve, placing centre to shoulder seam. Sew side seams. Weave in ends and block gently to measuremen­ts, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band. TRY PAT MENCHINI’S SUMMER-READY JUMPER NEXT MONTH.
