HALF HAP SHAWL

Cast on 3 sts using a 5mm circular needle, Yarn A and long-tail method.

With yarn at front of knitting, make a yarn over and knit to end of row.

[1 st increased, 4 sts on needle]

*Turn, bringing working yarn over RH needle, from front to back, to make a yarn over. Knit to end of row; rep from * until there are 54 loops on each side of the triangle. (The loops at each end of the knitting created by the yarn overs will be quite loose.) Place sts on cable or waste yarn.

With RS facing, using a circular needle and Yarn A, pick up loops along edge by passing the RH needle into each loop from the front to the back, PM before centre cast-on st, pass RH needle through centre cast-on st and knit it, PM, continue picking up loops up the other side. Place a SM 2 sts in from each edge and a locking SM in the centre stitch. [111 sts]

Starting at the end where the yarn is attached and moving locking marker up every few rows, cont as folls:

FEATHER & FAN PATTERN 1

Row 1 (RS) K2, yo, sl SM, K to centre st, sl SM, yo, K1, yo, sl SM, K to last 2 sts, sl SM, yo, K2. [4 sts inc’d]

Row 3 K2, yo, K to first SM, sl SM, *(k2tog) 3 times, (yo, K1) 6 times, (k2tog) 3 times; rep from * twice more, sl SM, K to centre st, yo, K1 (centre st), yo, K to SM, sl SM, **(k2tog) 3 times, (yo, K1) 6 times, (k2tog) 3 times; rep from ** twice, sl SM, K to last 2 sts, yo, K2. [4 sts inc’d] Row 4 Knit, slipping markers as you go.

These 4 rows form the Feather and Fan border pattern, every RS row the stitch count increases by 4. The stitch markers at either end and either side of the centre st separate the new sts from the pattern sts.

Work new sts as follows, AT THE SAME TIME following Colour Sequence below until 36 rows have been worked.

I-CORD CAST-OFF

2 K2togtbl (last st of i-cord and first stitch of picked up border sts).

3 Slip these 3 stitches back to the LH needle purlwise (prevents twisted sts).

Repeat steps 1-3 of i-cord cast-off across top edge of shawl, turn, work i-cord cast-off on the live border sts to end, cast off final 3 sts, cut yarn leaving a 7.5cm tail. Neaten ends.

FINISHING

Weave in ends to match colours of shawl before blocking.

Soak shawl in hand wash wool soap for at least 20 minutes (this allows the wool fibres to relax). Squeeze out excess moisture, roll in a towel and press firmly. Block by pinning out on a flat surface or a washing line: pinning the long straight edge across the top and using wooden clothes pegs evenly along the other 2 sides (1 peg in the centre) to give an even spread.
