YARN OVER SHORT ROWS TECHNIQUE

Each short row has a turning point, where the knitting is turned without completing the row.

On the knit side Knit to the turning point in the row. Turn so the purl side of the stitches is in front of you. Backward Yarn Over – take the yarn between the needles to the back of the work and then over the right needle to return the yarn to the front of the work. Continue along the row.

On the purl side Purl to the turning point in the row. Turn so the knit side of the stitches is in front of you – bring the yarn to the front between the needles and then over the right needle to return the yarn to the back. Continue along the row.

Closing the gap The gap formed at each turning point is closed when the gap is next encountered. With this technique the gap is quite noticeable because of the yarn over. When you encounter a yarn over, close the gap by working the yarn over with the next stitch.

On the knit side Knit until you reach a yarn over. Correct the mount of the yarn over so its right leg is in front of the needle and its left leg is at the back. Knit the yarn over together with the next stitch.

On the purl side Purl until you reach a yarn over. Slip the yarn over, knitwise, to the right needle and then slip the next stitch, knitwise, to the right needle. Return both stitches, purlwise, to the left needle and purl these two stitches together through the back of the loop.

Change to Yarn C and ensuring you knit the first row in a medium tone from the range of colours that the yarn changes through:

Row 1 K to 3 sts after 2nd marker reached, turn with yo, replacing marker after last knitted st.

Row 2 P to 3 sts after 1st marker, turn with yo, replacing marker after last knitted st.

Row 3 K to 3 sts after 2nd marker, working st and yo on previous row together, turn with yo, replacing marker after last knitted st.

Row 4 P to 3 sts after 1st marker, working st and yo on previous row together, turn with yo, replacing marker after last knitted st.

Rep Rows 3 and 4 until all of the sts are being worked (98 rows), casting off loosely on the final WS row. [441 sts]

Cast off loosely with a larger needle or with suspended cast-off. This is just a slight variation on the basic cast-off and helps ensure that the cast-off is not too tight. When lifting the 2nd stitch on the right needle over the 1st stitch, do not drop it from the tip of the left needle. This ‘suspends’ the stitch and ensures that it is not pulled up too tightly around the base of the 1st stitch. Bring the tip of the right needle in front of this.

TO MAKE UP

Pin out cast-on edge to emphasise zigzag and steam well, especially along cast-off edge. Weave in ends.
