Simply Knitting

Provisional cast on

Start your knit project the simple way with our steps.

-

1 Using your waste yarn, make a slip knot and place it on a crochet hook the same size as your needles. Place your crochet hook in front of your left needle, at a right angle. Make sure the working yarn is sitting behind the needle.

2 Use your crochet hook to catch the working yarn and draw it through the loop on the hook. If done correctly, you should now have a new stitch on the needle and a new loop on your crochet hook.

3 Gently tighten the new loop if necessary and return the working yarn to sit behind the needle. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have the desired number of stitches. Try not to pull your stitches too tightly when using this method.

4 Finally, make a chain by wrapping the yarn around the hook, without using the needle, and draw the yarn through the loop on the hook. Repeat a few times, then cut the yarn and pull the end through the last loop. This will become your cast-on row.

5 When it comes to removing the cast-on, start by pulling the end of the yarn back through the last loop of the chain. Carefully pull the yarn to unravel the crochet chain until you reach the first stitch that is part of your project.
