Circular cast on

You can never learn too many clever cast ons.

-

1 Cross yarn over itself to make a loop (the centre circle). Leave the tail hanging to the right and the working yarn to the left, nearest to you (as seen above).

2 Hold the cross of the circle between your left thumb and index finger – keep the working yarn tight by holding it between your ring finger and little finger. Extend your middle finger outwards to keep control of the working yarn.

3 Pass your crochet hook through the circle and pull the working yarn through it, keeping the yarn tight between your ring finger and little finger. Try to keep the nose of the hook pointing down to make it easier to catch the yarn.

4 Catch the working yarn around the hook again. Make sure you keep control of your tension by watching how your fingers are positioned at each step of the cast-on.

5 Pull the working yarn wrapped around your hook through the loop already on it – this is your first stitch. Repeat steps 3-5 until you have one-third of the number of stitches you want. Transfer to a DPN.

6 Repeat steps 3-5 until you have the same number of stitches again and slip these onto another DPN. Do this twice. Pull the tail tight to close the circle and knit through the back loops for the first round if the stitches seem loose.
