Pompoms, stripes and tassels? Get yourself beach ready knitting-style with this trendy set.
Welcome to our Collection section! Each issue, we’ll bring you a set of three exciting patterns from our expert designer panel, all using the same yarn. You can choose to make the whole set or just cast on one (or two) of the designs to suit how much time you have on your hands, it’s up to you! Our latest collection has been created by favourite designer Fran Morgan. Filled with easy garter stitch stripes, cute little pompoms and trendy tassels and trims, this stylish set is the perfect holiday companion.
SUNGLASSES CASE
Cast on 39 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn C. Row 1 (RS) K1, ssk, K15, s2kpo, K15, k2tog, K1.
Row 2 K1, *P1, K7, (K1, yo, K1) into next st, K7; rep from * once more, P1 K1. These 2 rows set patt.
*Work 2 rows in Yarn A. Work 2 rows in Yarn B. Work 2 rows in Yarn C. Rep from * until work measures 17cm.
TO MAKE UP
Block work. Sew in ends. Sew side seam. Sew cast-off edge tog, starting at side seam and working across.
BEACH BAG TRIM
Cast on 18 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn A.
Row 1 (RS) K8, P7, K3.
Row 2 Sl1 purlwise, P2, K7, P8. These last 2 rows set patt.
Work 19 more rows in patt, ending with a RS row.
Change to Yarn B, leaving a long length which will be used later for sewing up.
Next row P to end.
Cont from Row 1 of patt and work 20 rows. Change to Yarn C.
Next row P to end.
Cont in patt as set until 12 blocks of colour have been worked or until the piece meas the same as the top of bag you are using.
Next row (RS) K6, cast off rem sts. To make fringe slip 6 sts off the needle and unravel to beg of work.
POMPOMS
(MAKE 4 IN EACH COLOUR)
To make the small pompoms use a pronged fork and wind the yarn around the tines, until you have a fat ball of yarn. Use a piece of wool and thread this around the outside of ball and tie tightly. Slip the wool off the fork and cut down the middle, then trim to neaten.
FINISHING
Block fringe. The easiest way to do this is to lay the fringe flat and insert a metal ruler or piece of card into fringe and gently steam to straighten out. Attach the fringe to the beach bag, using the long yarn left after colour change. Work a running stitch under last 3 stitches on top of the Trim. If you prefer you may use fabric glue. Sew the pompoms through the fringe and bag, this helps to secure the fringe to the bag.
FLIP FLOPS
Cast on 11 sts, using 4mm needles and Yarn A.
Row 1 (RS) Cast off 7 sts, K to end.
Row 2 K4.
Row 3 (RS) Cast on 7 sts, cast off 7 sts,
K to end.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 once more.
Change to Yarn B, leaving a long end for sewing up.
Row 1 P4.
Row 2 Cast on 8 sts, cast off 8 sts, K4.
Row 3 K4.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 once more, then Row 2 once more.
Change to Yarn C, leaving a long end for sewing up.
Row 1 P4.
Row 2 Cast on 9 sts, cast off 9 sts, K4.
Row 3 K4.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 once more, then Row 2 once more. Change to Yarn A, leaving a long end for sewing up.
Row 1 P4.
Row 2 Cast on 9 sts, cast off 9 sts, K4.
Row 3 K4.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 once more, then Row 2 once more.
Change to Yarn B, leaving a long end for sewing up.
Row 1 P4.
Row 2 Cast on 8 sts, cast off 8 sts, K4.
Row 3 K4.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 once more, then Row 2 once more.
Change to Yarn C, leaving a long end for sewing up.
Row 1 P4.
Row 2 Cast on 7 sts, cast off 7 sts, K4. Rep Rows 1 and 2 once more, then Row 1 once more.
Cast off all sts.
FLOWER (MAKE 2)
Cast on 35 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn B.
*K1, cast off 5 sts [2 sts on RH needle]; rep from * to end.
Break yarn, leaving a long end. Using a tapestry needle, thread end through sts left on needle.
Pull tightly and fasten end.
FINISHING
Block Fringe. Using the long ends of yarn at colour changes, sew Fringe to flip flop strap by inserting needle through the back of work and taking yarn around the back of strap and inserting needle through other side.
Place a Flower on the centre of the strap and sew a button over it to secure it.
