Kids’ pompom poncho

Make the most of our tricky British summers with this easy-to-wear child’s poncho by Monica Russel.

Dressing your little ones in a warm, versatile knit is the ultimate summer joy for parents, and this variegated yarn brings a more contempora­ry look all round. This 20% wool, 80% acrylic knit delivers warmth for the breezes and on-trend colour for your fashioncon­scious offspring. We love its kangaroo pocket, neat constructi­on and wonderfull­y bouncy pompoms!

Note This poncho pattern starts at the top and works its way down to the bottom edge.

Cast on 84 (96: 108) sts using a 4mm circular needle. Join the work in the round being careful not to twist the sts. Place marker to denote start of round. Rounds 1-5 (K1, P1) to end.

Round 6 K21 (24: 27), PM K42 (48: 54)

PM, K21 (24: 27).

Begin working in Textured Stitch as folls: Round 1 Knit.

Round 2 *Purl to 2 sts before SM, kfb, K1, sl SM, kfb, rep from * once more, P to end. [4 sts inc’d]

Round 3 *K1, P1, to 2 sts before SM, K2, sl SM, (K1, P1) to 2 sts before SM, K2, sl SM, K1, (K1, P1) to last st, K1.

Round 4 Work 1x1 rib to 2 sts before SM, kfb, K1, sl SM, kfb, rib to 2 sts before SM, kfb, K1, sl SM, kfb, rib to end. Rounds 1-4 set pattern.

Rep Rounds 1-4, incorporat­ing increased sts into rib pattern until piece measures 34 (37: 39)cm.

BORDER

Round 1 Purl.

Round 2 P to 2 sts before SM, pbf, P1, sl SM, pbf, P to 2 sts before SM, pbf, P1, sl SM, pbf, P to end of round.

Rep Rounds 1 and 2 twice more.

Purl 1 more round.

Cast off sts and at the same time work inc sts as in Round 2 as you cast off around markers.

POCKET

Cast on 48 (50: 52) sts using the long-tail method.

Rows 1 and 2 Knit.

Row 3 K4, *K1, P1, rep from * to last 4 sts, K4.

Row 4 K4, *P1, K1, rep from * to last 4 sts, K4.

These 4 rows form pattern.

Cont in pattern until piece measures 14 (15: 16)cm.

Cast off.

Sew the Pocket to front of the Poncho. Make four pompoms and attach two to the front corner edge and two to the back-corner edge.
