Slip-stitch socks

Slipping your feet into a pair of handmade socks is a new kind of luxury, especially when they are as lovely as these ones by Jane Burns

SOCK ONE

Note When working the sections of slipped sts be careful not to pull the working yarn tightly across the back of the slipped sts. The second sock is worked switching Yarn A for Yarn B and vice versa.

CUFF

Cast on 60 (64: 68) sts using 2.5mm needles, the long-tail cast-on method and Yarn A. Join into the round taking care not to twist the sts. Place a marker for the beginning of the round.

Round 1 *K2 tbl, P2; rep from * to end.

Repeat Round 1 until cuff measures 2.5cm, or desired length from cast-on edge.

LEG PATTERN

Rounds 1 to 2 Knit in Yarn A. Change to Yarn B.

Round 3 Knit.

Round 4 *P6 (7: 8), (K3, P7) twice, K3, P1 (2: 3); rep from * once more. Change to Yarn A.

Rounds 5 to 8 *K6 (7: 8), (sl3, K7) twice, sl3, K1 (2: 3); rep from * once more.

Round 9 *K0 (1:2), (K5, C2B, sl1, C2F) 3 times, K0 (1: 2); rep from * once more. Rounds 10 to 12 Knit. Change to Yarn B. Round 13 Knit. Round 14 *P0 (1: 2), (P1, K3, P6) 3 times, P0 (1: 2); rep from * once more. Change to Yarn A.

Rounds 15 to 18 *K0 (1: 2), (K1, sl 3, K6) 3 times, K0 (1: 2); rep from * once more. Round 19 *K0 (1: 2), (C2B, sl 1, C2F, K5) 3 times, K0 (1: 2); rep from * once more. Round 20 Knit. Rounds 1 to 20 set pattern. Repeat Rounds 1 to 20 three more times.

HEEL FLAP SET UP

Next round K2, place marker for new beg of round. Cut Yarn A. Change to Yarn B.

HEEL FLAP

Note Worked over next 30 (32: 34) heel sts.

With RS facing, work back and forth as follows:

Row 1 (Sl1 purlwise, K1) 15 (16: 17) times, turn.

Row 2 Sl1 purlwise, P29 (31: 33), turn.

Repeat these 2 rows until 30 (32: 32) rows are complete.

TURN HEEL

Row 1 K16 (17: 18), ssk, K1, turn.

Row 2 Sl1, P3, p2tog, P1, turn.

Row 3 Sl1, K4, ssk, K1, turn.

Row 4 Sl1, purl to 1 st before gap, p2tog, P1, turn.

Row 5 Sl1, knit to 1 st before gap, ssk, K1, turn.

Continue as set until all sts are worked, omitting the final K1/P1 on the last 2 rows for sizes S and L. [16 (18: 18) sts]

HEEL GUSSET

Cut Yarn B.

Begin working in the round again as folls:

With Yarn A and RS facing, knit across 16 (18: 18) heel sts, pick up and knit 15 (16: 16) sts along the side of the heel, pick up and knit 1 stitch at corner from row below to prevent hole, PM, work Row 1 of Leg pattern across next 30 (32: 34) instep sts, PM, pick up and knit 1 stitch at corner from row below to prevent hole, pick up and knit 15 (16: 16) sts along the side of the heel and knit across 8 (9: 9) heel sts to centre of heel. PM for beginning of round. [78 (84: 86) sts]

SHAPE GUSSET

Note Change yarns at the beginning of the row as per the next row of the Leg Pattern instructio­ns, to continue 8 and 2 rows stripes across the foot.

Round 2 Knit to marker, sl sm, work next row of Leg Pattern across next 30 (32: 34) instep sts as set, sl sm, knit to end.

Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 (working from Leg pattern as set on instep sts) until 60 (64: 68) sts remain.

FOOT

Knit to start of instep, PM to mark new beginning of round. Rounds 1 to 2 Knit in Yarn A.

Change to Yarn B.

Round 3 Knit.

Round 4 *P4 (5: 6), (K3, P7) twice, K3, P3 (4: 5); rep from * once more. Change to Yarn A.

Rounds 5 to 8 *K4 (5: 6), (sl3, K7) twice, sl3, K3 (4: 5); rep from * once more.

Round 9 *K3 (4:5), (C2B, sl1, C2F, K5) twice, C2B, sl1, C2F, K2 (3: 4); rep from * once more.

Rounds 10 to 12 Knit.

Change to Yarn B.

Round 13 Knit.

Round 14 *P9 (10: 11), (K3, P7) twice, P2 (3: 4); rep from * once more. Change to Yarn A. Rounds 15 to 18 *K9 (10: 11), (sl 3, K7) twice, K2 (3: 4); rep from * once more. Round 19 *K9 (10: 11), (C2B, sl 1, C2F, K5) twice, K2 (3: 4); rep from * once more. Round 20 Knit. Rounds 1 to 20 set pattern. Repeat Rounds 1 to 20 three more times.

SHAPE TOE

Change to Yarn B.

Round 1 *K1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before marker, k2tog, K1, sl sm; rep from * once more. [4 sts dec’d]

Round 2 Knit, slipping markers.

Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until 40 (44: 44) sts remain in total.

Work Round 1 only until 20 (20: 20) sts remain.

MAKING UP

Slip all instep sts onto one needle. [10 (10: 10) sts]

Slip all heel/sole sts onto another needle. [10 (10: 10) sts] Holding two needles together, graft sts using Kitchener Stitch. Weave in ends and gently block to measuremen­ts, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band.

SOCK TWO

Work as Sock One, swapping Yarns A and B.
