MITTENS

Note Both mitts are worked from the same Charts. For Left Mitt, work all Chart rounds reading from right to left. For Right Mitt, reverse the design (to make a pair of mitts) by reading all Chart rounds from left to right.

LEFT MITT

Cast on 42 sts using 3mm DPNs and Yarn A.

Distribute sts evenly, taking care not to twist the cast-on edge and join to work in the round.

Round 1 (RS) *K1, P1; rep from * to end.

This round forms rib.

Cont in rib until mitt meas 6cm. Change to 3.25mm DPNs.

Using the Fair Isle technique and reading all Chart rounds from right to left, work in patt from Chart for hand, which is worked entirely in st st (knit every round), as folls:

Note Rowan Kidsilk Haze yarn is used double throughout. Work Rounds 1-2 from Chart.

SHAPE FOR THUMB GUSSET

Round 3 Patt 39 sts, M1, K1, M1, patt 2 sts. [44 sts] Work 2 rounds.

Round 6 Patt 39 sts, M1, patt 3 sts, M1, patt 2 sts. [46 sts] Work 2 rounds.

Round 9 Patt 39 sts, M1, patt 5 sts, M1, patt 2 sts. [48 sts] Work 2 rounds.

Round 12 Patt 39 sts, M1, patt 7 sts, M1, patt 2 sts. [50 sts] Work 3 rounds.

DIVIDE FOR THUMB OPENING

Round 16 Patt 38 sts, slip next 11 sts onto a holder (for thumb), turn and cast on 11 sts, turn and patt last st. [50 sts]

**Work 30 rounds, ending after Chart Round 46.

SHAPE TOP

Keeping Chart correct, shape top of hand as folls:

Round 47 (Skpo, patt 21 sts, k2tog) twice. [46 sts]

Round 48 (Skpo, patt 19 sts, k2tog) twice. [42 sts]

Round 49 (Skpo, patt 17 sts, k2tog) twice. [38 sts]

Round 50 (Skpo, patt 15 sts, k2tog) twice. [34 sts]

Round 51 (Skpo, patt 13 sts, k2tog) twice. [30 sts]

Round 52 (Skpo, patt 11 sts, k2tog) twice. [26 sts]

Round 53 (Skpo, patt 9 sts, k2tog) twice. [22 sts]

Round 54 (Skpo, patt 7 sts, k2tog) twice. [18 sts]

Round 55 (Skpo, patt 5 sts, k2tog) twice. [14 sts]

Round 56 (Skpo, patt 3 sts, k2tog) twice. [10 sts]

Break yarn and thread through rem 10 sts. Pull up tight and fasten off securely.**

THUMB

Using 3.25mm DPNs and working each stitch in colours as set from Thumb Chart, beg with Round 1, pick up and knit 1 st from row-end

edge before 11 sts left on Thumb holder, patt 11 sts on Thumb holder, pick up and knit 1 st from row-end edge, then turn work and pick up and knit 11 sts from cast-on edge at top of Thumb opening. [24 sts]

Distribute sts evenly and work in rounds from Thumb Chart as folls: ***Work Thumb Chart Rounds 2 to 16.

SHAPE TOP

Keeping Chart correct, shape top of Thumb as folls:

Round 17 (K1, k2tog, patt 7 sts, skpo) twice. [20 sts]

Round 18 (K1, k2tog, patt 5 sts, skpo) twice. [16 sts]

Round 19 (K1, k2tog, patt 3 sts, skpo) twice. [12 sts]

Round 20 (K1, k2tog, patt 1 sts, skpo) twice. [8 sts]

Break yarn and thread through rem 8 sts. Pull up tight and fasten off securely.

RIGHT MITT

Cast on 42 sts using 3mm DPNs and Yarn A.

Distribute sts evenly, taking care not to twist cast-on edge and join to work in the round.

Round 1 (RS) *P1, K1; rep from * to end.

This round forms rib.

Change to 3.25mm DPNs.

Round 16 Patt first st, slip next 11 sts onto a holder (for Thumb), turn and cast on 11 sts, turn and patt last 38 sts. [50 sts] Complete as given for Left Mitt from ** to **.

THUMB

Using 3.25mm DPNs and working from Thumb Chart, beg with Round 1, pick up and knit 11 sts from cast-on edge at top of Thumb opening, and 1 st from row-end edge, patt 11 sts on Thumb holder, then pick up and knit 1 st from other row-end edge of Thumb opening. [24 sts]

Distribute sts evenly and work in rounds from Thumb Chart, reading all Chart rounds from left to right (to reverse design to make a pair of mitts), as folls:

Complete as given for Left Mitt from ***.

FINISHING

Weave in ends. Block mittens carefully, following any instructio­ns on the ball band.
