MITTEN TOPS

-

Once you’ve worked your mitten to the correct length (approximately the top of your little finger) you need to begin decreasing to shape the top. Here are three of our favourite examples:

THE STAR

Our example swatch starts with 45 sts and is worked in the round. Every 9 stitches place a stitch marker.

1 Decrease row *Knit to 2 sts before the first marker, k2tog, slip the marker and repeat from * to the end of the round. You will decrease 1 st for each set of sts between markers. Slip the marker and repeat from * to the end of the round.

2 When you are down to 1 st between each marker, break your yarn, thread it through the remaining sts and pull tight to fasten off, before weaving your yarn end neatly into the inside of the mitten.

THE POINTED TOP

Taking note of thumb placement, divide your stitches equally into two (for the front and palm). Mark the beg and end of these sections with stitch markers.

1 Decrease round *Ssk, knit to 2 sts before next marker, K2tog, sl SM.… 2 …Rep from * once more. [4 sts dec’d]

3 Repeat the decrease round until you have 4 sts: 2 for the front and 2 for the palm. If you want a longer top to the mitten, work 1 round/row between each set of decreases. Break yarn, thread through live sts and fasten off.
