TWIDDLE-TASTIC

I started knitting twiddlemuffs in August. My dad had just moved into a local residential home after losing my mum. There’s a dementia unit attached to it and I thought I’d knit some twiddlemu s using up my scraps of wool and any ‘twiddly bits’ I find. They are fun to make.

When I took a couple into the home recently, the manageress was telling me they also have another use for them. When a resident has to have a cannular in their arm, it can be covered by a mu to keep the arm warm and it distracts them from twiddling with the connection. Helen Keirle, via Facebook

HAPPY TO HELP

The group I run with my friend has done a huge list of charity knitting since 2011, including a yellow duck project, baby blankets, PREM cardies, dementia cu s and mu s, poppies for the Welsh WWI memorial and much more. Some knits we have given to our local hospital and others we have given direct to the relevant charity or via a charity collection network.

Our theme is always how we promote Welsh language, learning and culture where possible. It started because I’m a passionate knitter and wanted to help retired people in my community find a place to meet and knit or crochet. We’re always looking for new things. This year until Christmas we are knitting mini stockings for our local hospital to put in the baby unit and on the dementia ward. Lorraine Mckee, via Facebook

BABY BEANIES

My daughter is a community care worker and, as part of her work, visits new mums and their babies. About 16 years ago I started knitting beanies for her to give to them, but I wasn’t very pleased with the pattern I was using. Then one morning in church I saw a baby, Tahlia, wearing the perfect beanie. Her mother didn’t have the pattern, but she gave me Tahlia’s hat on loan so I could copy it. After a bit of tweaking it is now the only pattern I use, so they’re called Tahlia hats! I knit as many as are needed each year, for about 16 years. I’ve knitted hundreds of them!
