HOW TO... WORK KITCHENER STITCH (OR GRAFTING)

Master this brilliant technique and graft your sock toes together beautifully

Your stitches should be split evenly across two needles. Hold the needles parallel with both purl sides facing inwards, the points of both needles and the end of the yarn you were working with to the right.

1 Insert the sewing needle as if to purl into the first front stitch and pull the yarn through, then insert the sewing needle as if to knit the first stitch on the back needle and pull the yarn through.

2 Insert the sewing needle into the first stitch on the front needle knitwise, slip the stitch off the needle, then go into the next front stitch purlwise. Pull yarn through.

3 Insert the sewing needle into the first stitch on the back needle as if to purl and slip the stitch from the needle, then insert the sewing needle into the next stitch on the back needle as if to knit. Pull yarn through.

4 Repeat Steps 2-3 until all the stitches have been worked. Check that you’re not pulling the yarn too tight as you work across the toe section. The grafting will blend in with the knitting once finished. Remember you can only use Kitchener Stitch when both sets of needles carry the same number of stitches. Count as you work to make sure that you don’t miss out any stitches.
