Shell pattern (number of stitches a multiple of 3 + 1):

Row 1: ch3 (= 1 tr), tr 1 in each ch Row 2: ch1 (= 1 dc) * ch3, skip next 3 tr, dc 1 between the 3rd and 4th tr, rep from * ending with 1 dc into the last tr.

Row 3: ch3 * tr 3 into the next ch loop of previous row, rep from * ending with 1 tr into the last dc. Row 4: ch1 (= 1dc) * ch3, dc1 into the gap between the next 2 shells, rep from * ending with 1 dc into the last tr.

Repeat rows 3 and 4.

Back

Crochet 91 (94) 100 (109) 115 ch (must be a multiple of 3+1) Work 68 (70) 72 (72) 72 cm in shell pattern as described above. Armhole:

A: Starting with a row 3: ch3, tr3, skip one ch space, * tr3 into the next ch space, rep from* ending with tr3 into the second last space, skip 1 ch space, tr1 into the 2nd ch of previous row.

B: ch3 * dc1 into the space between the next 2 shells, rep from * ending with 1 dc into the 3rd ch of previous row.

Repeat rows A and B another 2 times (= 6 shells decreased on each side) Continue straight on in shell pattern until 16 (17) 18 (19) 20 cm measured from beginning of armhole decrease. Ending with a row 3.

Collar shaping of the back

** In the next row ch4, *dc1 into the space between the shells, ch3, rep from * another 7 7 (8) 8 (9) 9 x times, turn.

Next row work as a row 3. Work a row 4 and 3 for another 2 times (= 3 rows shell pattern). Cut yarn. Join yarn on the opposite shoulder and repeat from **

Front (work 2)

Ch 45 (48) 51 (54) 57, turn. ch3, 1tr into each ch = 46 (49) 52 (55) 58 tr (incl the 3ch)

Work in shell pattern until same length as back up to armhole shaping.

Decrease on both sides as for back (for armhole and collar shaping). Next row: as row A, ending with 3 tr into the last (!) loop, tr1 into the 2nd ch of previous row. Continue straight on in shell pattern until same length of back. Close shoulder seems.

Collar edging

Starting at the front right corner (seen as if you are wearing the cardigan) work as follows:

Row 1: ch4, tr2 into the 1st chloop * tr3 into each ch-loop, repeat from * up to shoulder seem. Work tr3 into shoulder seem, continue from * tr3 into each turning ch-loop of the back collar and tr 3 between the shells of the lower back collar. Work the remaining edge mirrorwise as the first half. Ending with tr 3 into the last loop and tr 1 into the 3rd ch.

Row 2: ch4 turn, dc1 between the shells, * ch3, dc1 between the shells, rep from * to end.

Row 3: ch3 turn * tr 3 into each ch-loop, ending with tr 3 into the last loop, tr 1 into the 2nd ch. Repeat rows 2 and 3 another 9 (9) 10 (10) 10 times.

Sleeves (work 2)

Ch 40 (43) 46 (46) 49, tr1 into 4th ch, tr1 into each ch to end. Work row 2 – 4 as described for back.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until a total of 4 shell patterns rows worked. Ending with a row 3. Increase rows for sleeves:

A: ch4, dc1 into the last tr of previous row, * ch3, dc1 between

the shells, rep from * ending with dc1 into the 2nd ch of previous row, (ch4, dc1) into the same ch.

B: ch3, tr 3 into the first loop * tr3 into the next loop, rep from * ending with tr1 into the 2nd ch of previous row.

7 (7) 6 (5) 5 rows in shell pattern. Work increases as described another 2 (2) 3 (4) 4 times after each 7. (6.) 6. (5.) 5. Shell pattern row, then 3 x after each 3rd shell pattern row. Work another 2 (4) 4 (4) rows of shell pattern.

Start armhole shaping as described for back:

A: Starting with a row 3: tr3, ch3, tr3, skip one ch space, * tr3 into the next ch space, rep from* ending with tr3 into the second last space, skip 1 ch space, dc1 into the 2nd ch of previous row.

B: ch3 * dc1 into the space between the next 2 shells, rep from * ending with dc1 into the 3rd ch of previous row.

Finishing

Sew in sleeves.

Sew side seems and finally sew sleeve seems. Leave appr. 5 cm open for open extra long cuff. Decorate the end of the seem with a button. Design: Kremke / Britta Kremke
