LANTERN HAT, COWL & MITTS SET

Note This set is made using a special technique called lantern light and is made of two layers — the top lace layer and a simple stocking stitch layer in a contrast yarn. This makes the fabric double in thickness. To achieve the same thickness, the rib and the crown of the beanie (or top and bottom of the cowl or hand warmers) are worked by holding two strands of yarn.

Single strand layers as well as two-strand parts are worked on the same size needles.

In the lace pattern on WS rows work K1, P1 into double loop of 'YO twice'. This is shown on the chart and in the written stitch pattern.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES PICKING UP STITCHES FOR LIGHT SECTION

Starting with two strands of yarn work the edge and rib (in corresponding colours), then cut off one strand of Yarn A and continue to work the Lantern Cage Lace Pattern with one strand of yarn. After the lace is finished leave stitches on a stitch holder.

To make the Lantern Light Layer, fold the lace layer down to the outside of the work, so that you can see the round of purl bumps just above the rib on the WS of the work. Using Yarn B pick up and knit one stitch from each purl bump.

THREE-NEEDLE JOIN

To join the Lantern Cage Layer and the Lantern Light Layer when both layers are complete hold the work on the two needles with the Lantern Cage Layer at the front needle and the Lantern Light Layer at the back. Using two strands of Yarn A, insert a third needle from front to back, first through the first stitch from the front needle (Cage) then through the first stitch from the back needle (Light) and draw the yarn through both sts. Knit them both at the same time as you would do with a regular knit stitch to make one new stitch on the right needle. Repeat to the end of the row.
