Join a knitting club!
We just love hearing about community knitting groups, and this issue we discover two fab groups knitting across London and Finchley
This month we were delighted to chat with Elizabeth Alcock who co-ordinates two North London knitting groups – HGS U3A and Finchley WI. Both dedicated groups knit in response to appeals from local and national sources. At present the group currently donates to Devon County Show, UK Handknitting Association, Age UK, Innocent and the Royal Free Hospital. The variety of charities they support provides members with a wide selection of charity projects to chose from and accomodates knitters of all levels. Members also work on their own projects, and frequently arrive with half-finished WIPs which they have got stuck on and need some advice from the group to complete!

The ladies have also made Olympic cushions which were given as gifts for the athletes, crisis blankets, art instillations and rather cheeky greeting squares for Valentines Day. Plus, Finchley WI also run a cafe for a two-day wool show in Central London! Both knitting groups are home to a keen bunch of knitters at varying levels, who knit for local charities, hospitals and amazing campaigns such as Age UK. To date the group have made bonding squares, neonatal unit orange hats, blankets for BLISS boxes, log cabin squares and lap blankets for Age UK. The ladies really enjoy knitting Christmas decorations which are sold at their annual Frost Fair, with profits going to chosen local charities. At the heart of both groups is a passion to combine good fun, support each other, share exciting knitting patterns and trade knitting skills.
