A 400-hat target, smashed!
When Inspire: Culture, Learning and Libraries launched their latest knitting challenge, little did they know how eagerly locals would pick up the baton…
Back in 2020 SK ran a story on the upcoming event in Nottinghamshire to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower journey to America. Well, fast forward a few months and we are delighted to report the incredible success of this project! Organiser, Lindsay Hall, reveals the project’s latest news…
WHY 400 HATS?
The year 2020 marked the 400th anniversary of when the pilgrims originally left for North America, so to follow that theme, Inspire: Culture, Learning and Libraries challenged their knitting groups and sta to make a woolly hat each one of the 400 years. Little did the group know that the response would be incredible! Not just 400, but a whopping 773 hats were lovingly knitted for the project. And not just hats – four blankets and eight scarves, which were all donated to Knit for Peace, a non-profit organisation that helps those in need in the UK and across the world too. A truly wonderful result for this worthwhile charity event.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Every year Inspire support a di erent charity and put out a call to groups and individuals that want to take part. The annual theme is always announced in the spring and Inspire are very excited to be commissioning something special for 2021. If you are a Nottingham knitter, you can find information on how to get involved in the 2021 challenge at www. inspireculture.org.uk/knit, or call into your local Inspire Library and see if you can join a group! Nottinghamshire libraries have local knit and natter groups full of talented crafters that are always happy to welcome new members and share skills. They are wonderful!
