Cute animal bootees

Keep tiny toes warm and cosy with these sweet bootees, each one decorated with a baby spring animal.

LAMB BOOTEES (MAKE 2) BOOTEE

Cast on 40 (44: 48) sts using 2.75mm needles and Yarn B. Row 1 *K1, P1; rep from * to end.

Row 2 *K1, P1; rep from * to end.

Change to Yarn A.

Continue working 1x1 rib as set until piece measures 5 (6: 7)cm from cast-on edge ending with a RS row.

Next row *K1, P1; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2tog. [39 (43: 47) sts]

Change to 3.25mm needles.

Row 1 *K1, P1; rep from * to last st, K1.

Row 2 P1, *K1, P1; rep from * to end.

Row 3 *P1, K1; rep from * to last st, P1.

Row 4 K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to end.

INSTEP SET-UP

Row 1 (K1, P1) 13 (14: 15) times, K1 and turn.

Row 2 P1, (K1, P1) 7 times (work back and forth on these 15 sts leaving rem sts on needle unworked for now).

Row 2 (K1, P1) 7 times, K1.

Row 3 (K1, P1) 7 times, K1.

Row 4 (P1, K1) 7 times, P1*

Repeat from * to * 3 (4: 5) times more.

Cut yarn, slide all sts onto one needle.

With RS facing rejoin Yarn A to held stitches.

Knit 12 (14: 16) sts, pick up and knit 8 (10: 12) sts along edge of instep, K15 instep sts, pick up and knit 8 (10: 12) sts along edge of instep, knit rem 12 (14: 16) sts. [55 (63: 71) sts in total]

SOLE

Change to Yarn B and 2.75mm needles. Rows 1 to 11 Knit.

Row 10 Purl.

Repeat Rows 9 and 10, three times more.

Cast off.

Fold cast-off edge so that the join is at the back of the head and sew cast-off edge closed, sew back seam of head, stuff and sew top of head closed.

EARS (MAKE 4)

Cast on 5 sts using 2.75mm needles adnd Yarn B.

Row 6 P3tog.[1 st]

Cut yarn and pull through rem sts. Darn in ends and sew to sides of head using image as a guide. Use black yarn to embroider the eyes and mouth on and sew head to bootee.

BUNNY BOOTEES BOOTEE (MAKE 2)

Using Yarn D and 2.75mm needles, cast on 3 sts.

Row 1 Knit.

Row 2 Purl.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 once more.

Row 5 K3tog. [1 st]

Cut yarn and pull through remaining st.

MAKING UP

Sew side edges of outer ears together and darn in ends, sew inner ears into position using image as guide, sew to head. Use black yarn to embroider on eyes. Sew head onto Bootee.

CHICK BOOTEES BOOTEE (MAKE 2)

Work as for Bunny Bootees, working in Yarn C throughout.

CHICK HEAD (MAKE 2)

Cast on 8 sts using Yarn C and 2.75mm needles.

Row 1 *Kfb; rep from * to last st, K1. [15 sts]

Row 2 Purl.

Row 3 *K2, M1; rep from * to last st, K1. [22 sts]

Row 4 Purl.

Row 5 *K3, M1; rep from * to last st, K1. [29 sts]

Row 6 Purl.

Row 7 Knit.

Row 8 Purl.

Repeat Rows 7 and 8 once more.

Row 11 *K2, k2tog; rep from * to last st, K1. [22 sts]

Row 12 Purl.

Row 13 *K1, k2tog; rep from * to last st, K1. [15 sts]

Row 14 Purl.

Row 15 *K2tog; rep from * to last st, K1. [8 sts]

Row 16 *P2tog; rep from * to end. [4 sts]

Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Using tapestry needle, thread through rem sts and pull tight to close secure with stitches.

BEAK (MAKE 2)

Cast on 7 sts using orange yarn and 2.75mm needles. Rows 1 to 3 Knit.

Cast off.

Darn in end, fold beak in half and sew to head using image as a guide. Using black yarn embroider on eyes. Using orange yarn, attach a couple of strands to top centre of head and fray. Sew head to bootee to finish.
