PIRATE JUMPER BACK

*Cast on 72 (76: 84: 88: 94) sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn A. Rows 1 and 2 Knit.

Change to Yarn B

Rows 3 and 4 Knit.

Change to Yarn C

Rows 5 and 6 Knit.

Rows 3 to 6 form stripe pattern.

Continue to work in garter stitch as set in stripe pattern until rib measures 2.5 (3.5: 4: 4.5: 4.5)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.**

Change to 4mm needles and Yarn D.

Work in stocking stitch until Back measures 22.5 (25: 30: 32: 34.5) cm, ending after a WS row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Next row Cast off 3 (4: 5: 6: 6) sts at the beg of next 2 rows. [66 (68: 74: 76: 82) sts]

Continue to work in stocking stitch as set until piece measures 35 (39: 45: 49: 53)cm from cast-on edge ending with a RS row.

Next row P17 (17: 19: 18: 21), PM, P32 (34: 36: 40: 40), PM, P17 (17: 19: 18: 21) Cast off, keeping markers in place.

FRONT

Work as Back from * to **.

Change to 4mm needles and Yarn D.

Begin working in st st from Chart as folls:

Row 1 K11 (13: 17: 19: 22), work Row 1 from Chart, knit to end. Row 2 P11 (13: 17: 19: 22), work Row 2 from Chart, purl to end. Continue to work from Chart as set, then continue in st st and Yarn D only, AT THE SAME TIME when piece measures 22.5 (25: 30: 32: 34.5)cm from cast-on edge ending after a WS row, shape armholes as folls:

Next row Cast off 3 (4: 5: 6: 6) sts at the beg of next 2 rows. [66 (68: 74: 76: 82) sts]

Continue to work in stocking stitch as set until piece measures: 27.5 (31.5: 37.5: 41.5: 45.5)cm in from cast-on edge ending after a WS row.

SHAPE LEFT NECK

Next row K28 (28: 31: 31: 34) turn, leave rem 38 (40: 43: 45: 48) sts on holder.

Next row Purl.

Working on these 28 (28: 31: 31: 34) sts only continue as follows:

Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 5 (5: 6: 6: 6) times. [23 (23: 25: 25: 28) sts]

Dec 1 st at neck edge every RS row 6 (6: 6: 7: 7) times. [17 (17: 19: 18: 21) sts].

Continue working in st st until piece meas 35 (39: 45: 49: 53)cm, ending after a WS row.

Cast off.

SHAPE RIGHT NECK

With RS facing, and working on rem 38 (40: 43: 45: 48) sts, slip next 10 (12: 12: 14: 14) sts onto stitch holder, rejoin Yarn D to rem 28 (28: 31: 31: 34) sts and knit to end.

Next row Purl.

Working on these 28 (28: 31: 31: 34) sts only continue as follows: Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 5 (5: 6: 6: 6) times.

[23 (23: 25: 25: 28) sts]

Dec 1 st at neck edge every RS row 6 (6: 6: 7: 7) times. [17 (17: 19: 18: 21) sts].

Continue working in st st until piece meas 35 (39: 45: 49: 53)cm, ending after a WS row.

Cast off.

SLEEVES (MAKE 2) STRIPE SEQUENCE FOR LEFT SLEEVE

*Yarn C, 6 rows, Yarn B 2 rows; rep from * twice more.

STRIPE SEQUENCE FOR RIGHT SLEEVE

*Yarn A 6 rows, Yarn B 2 rows; rep from * twice more.

Continue to work remainder of Sleeve in Yarn D.

Cast on 40 (44: 48: 52: 56) sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn A. Rows 1 and 2 Knit.

Change to Yarn B.

Rows 3 and 4 Knit.

Change to Yarn C.

Rows 5 and 6 Knit.

Rows 3 to 6 form stripe pattern.

Continue to work in garter stitch as set in stripe pattern until rib measures 2.5 (3.5: 4: 4.5: 4.5)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.

Change to 4mm needles.

Beg with a knit row, work in stripe sequence for Left or Right Sleeve AT THE SAME TIME shaping as follows:

Inc 1 st at each end of 5th and every following 6th row 2 (3: 0: 4: 4) times.

Inc 1 st at each end of every following 8th row 5 (5: 9: 7: 8) times. [56 (62: 68: 76: 82) sts].

Continue working in stocking stitch as set until piece measures 31.5 (33.5: 37: 41: 45)cm in from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.

Cast off.

NECKBAND

Join right shoulder seam. With RS facing, using 3.25mm needles and Yarn D, pick up and knit 23 (23: 24: 23: 23) sts evenly along left side of neck, work across 10 (12: 12: 14: 14) sts left on holder at front of neck, pick up and knit 23 (23: 24: 23: 23) sts evenly along right side of neck, pick up and knit 32 (34: 36: 40: 40) from cast-off sts at back of neck. [88 (92: 96: 100: 100) sts].

Rows 1 to 7 Knit.

Row 8 Knit, decrease 10 sts evenly across neckband. [78 (82: 86: 90: 90) sts]

Row 9 Knit.

Change to Yarn A.

Row 10 Knit.

Cast off using Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Sewn Cast Off (see above) and Yarn A.

HAT BRIM

Cast on 42 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn C. Rows 1 and 2 Knit.

Row 3 K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, K1. [2 sts dec’d] Row 4 Purl.

Repeat last 2 rows until 32 sts remain.

Cast off.

CROSS (MAKE 2)

Cast on 3 sts using 3.25 DPNs and Yarn B.

*Knit 3 sts, slide to other end of needle without turning work; rep from * until i-cord measures 6cm.

Cut yarn leaving a tail and thread through rem 3 sts, pull tight to close end.

HAIR (MAKE 6)

Work as Cross until 11cm long. Cut yarn leaving a tail and thread through rem 3 sts, pull tight to close end. Join three strands at one end, this end will sit under the Hat Brim. Braid the hair, securing with sts as your work. Wrap Yarn B around the bottom of the braid to mimic a hair band.

EYE (MAKE 1)

Cast on 2 sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn B. Row 1 Kfb, K1. [3 sts]

Row 2 Purl.

Row 3 (K1, M1) twice, K1. [5 sts]

Row 4 Purl.

Row 5 (K1, M1) 4 times, K1. [9 sts]

Rows 6 to 8 Beg with a purl row, work in st st. Row 9 (Ssk) twice, K1, (k2tog) twice. [5 sts] Row 10 Purl.

Row 11 Ssk, K1, k2tog. [3 sts]

Row 12 P3tog. [1 st]

Fasten off.

IRIS (MAKE 1)

Cast on 5 sts using 3.25mm needle and Yarn D.

Row 1 Knit.

Cut yarn leaving a long tail, thread through all 5 sts and pull tight, sew small side seam to form a circle.

EYE PATCH (MAKE 1)

Cast on 12 sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn C.

Rows 1 to 11 Beg with a knit row, work in st st.

Row 12 P2tog, purl to last 2 sts, p2togtbl. [10 sts]

Cut yarn leaving a long tail and thread through rem 10 sts, pull to form a gentle curve at the bottom and secure with sts.

NOSE

Cast on 6 sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn E. Rows 1 to 6 Beg with a knit row, work in st st.

1 Cut yarn leaving a long tail and thread through all 6 sts, work a running st up the side of the piece, across the cast-on sts and down the other side, pull on yarn to gather piece to form a ball and secure with sts.

2 Using the image as a guide, sew on Hair, Hat Brim and then Cross pieces.

3 Sew the Iris to the centre of the Eye and embroider on a small black dot for the pupil. Using the image as a guide sew on the Eye, Eye patch and Nose.

4 Using Yarn C, embroider on the Eye Patch strap. Using Yarn F embroider on eyebrow and freckles. Using Yarn A embroider on the mouth.

MAKING UP

Join left shoulder and neck band seams, fold Sleeves in half lengthwise and line the centre of the Sleeve cap with the shoulder seam, pin Sleeve into place. Once happy, sew into position. Join side and Sleeve seams. Gently block to measuremen­ts, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band.
