Cast on this cute, canine knit for a dog-mad friend or family member. Its simple shape is enhanced with two-colour intarsia. By Martin Storey

These 2 rows form rib.

Cont in rib until work meas 8cm, ending with WS facing for next row.

Next row (WS) Rib 2 (0: 7: 4: 2: 6), work 2 tog, (rib 7 (6: 5: 6: 6: 5), work 2 tog) 12 (16: 18: 18: 20: 24) times, rib 2 (0: 7: 4: 2: 6). [101 (113: 123: 135: 145: 157) sts]

Change to 4mm needles.

Beg with a K row, working in st st throughout, cont as folls: Cont straight until back meas 40 (40.5: 41: 41.5: 42: 42.5)cm, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLES

Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. [95 (107: 117: 129: 139: 151) sts] Next row (RS) K2, k2tog, K to last 4 sts, k2tog tbl, K2.

Next row P2, p2tog tbl, P to last 4 sts, p2tog, P2.

Working all raglan armhole decreases as set by last 2 rows, dec 1 st at each end of next 3 (9: 13: 21: 23: 29) rows, then on foll 28 (27: 27: 25: 27: 26) alt rows. [29 (31: 33: 33: 35: 37) sts]

Work 1 row, ending with RS facing for next row.

Break yarn and leave sts on a holder (for neckband).

FRONT

Work as given for Back until 26 (22: 18: 14: 10: 6) rows less have been worked than on Back to beg of raglan armhole shaping, ending with RS facing for next row.

PLACE MOTIF

Using a combinatio­n of the Fair Isle and intarsia techniques, now place motif from Chart, which is worked entirely in st st beg with a K row, as folls:

Next row (RS) Using Yarn A K27 (33: 38: 44: 49: 55), work next 47 sts as Row 1 of Motif Chart, using Yarn A K27 (33: 38: 44: 49: 55).

Next row Using Yarn A P27 (33: 38: 44: 49: 55), work next 47 sts as Row 2 of Motif Chart, using Yarn A P27 (33: 38: 44: 49: 55). These 2 rows set the sts – centre 47 sts in patt from Chart for motif with edge sts still in st st using Yarn A.

Cont working Chart as set, ending after Chart Row 26 (22: 18: 14: 10: 6) and with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLES
