1 Fold head in half to find centre, then insert safety eyes on the 9th row up from last inc row, leaving 8 sts between them. Fasten them securely at back.

2 Sew seam using mattress stitch to halfway down head. Sew seam from base of Body to neck and stuff.

3 Use a length of CC to work a row of running stitches around neckline then pull up tightly to shape neck. Secure at back of neck and weave in loose ends.

4 Cut a 20cm length of black embroidery thread and work a curved mouth over 4 sts, starting about 3 rows down from eyes, holding the centre of the mouth down with a small stitch.

5 For eyelashes, cut a length of black embroidery thread and separate the strands. Using 2 strands held tog, work 2 small straight sts at top outer edge of safety eye, the higher one very slightly longer than the lower one. Secure ends in back of Head, add a little more filling then sew rem seam. 6 Use the edge of a red colouring pencil to work a few small circles below eyes to indicate cheeks. 7 With Body seam at centre back, sew a few sts to join front of Body to back of Body, creating 2 circles for attaching the Legs.

8 With feet facing forward, sew top of Legs to openings at base of Body, adding more filling as you go.

9 Weave in all loose ends.

HAIR

Hair is worked starting from the back of the head. Cast on 18 sts using 3mm needles.

BAG

Start at the top.

Cast on 8 sts using 3mm needles and Yarn H. Rows 1 to 3 (K1, P1) 4 times.

Row 4 (RS) Kfb, K6, kfb. [10 sts]

Rows 5 to 26 Starting on a WS purl row work in st st.

Row 27 K2tog, K6, k2tog. [8 sts] Rows 28 to 30 Rep Rows 1 to 3. Cast off.

1 Fold in half and join seams.

2 Make a twisted cord for strap – cut a 150cm length of Yarn H and fold in half, tying a knot at the end.

3 Put the centre of yarn over a drawer handle, and use a pencil or cable needle at the other end to twist yarn until very tight.

4 Release the tension on the yarn a little and it should begin to twist on itself again. Guide it so it folds in the centre.

5 Hold the ends tog and tie a knot to secure the lengths tog, then trim twisted cord to about 24cm.

6 Place the cord over the doll’s shoulder then sew the ends to the inside of the Bag, adjusting length to suit.

7 Add 2 decorative beads as bag charms to finish.

VIOLET

Thread a length of Yarn M all the way around the knitted piece, pulling up gently as you go. Add filling to create a ball shape. Pull up tightly and secure. Pin buns on top of head, leaving a 3cm gap between them. Check they look even then sew securely (you may want to make and fit the hat first to check the buns are in the correct place before sewing).

POCKET LININGS (MAKE 2)

Cast on 6 sts using 3mm needles and Yarn G. Rows 1 to 6 Starting on a RS knit row work 6 rows in st st.

Break yarn and leave sts on a holder. RIGHT LEG

Cast on 22 sts using 3mm needles and Yarn N. Row 1 (WS) Knit.

Rows 2 to 47 Starting on a RS knit row work in st st.**

Cast off.

Join side seams. Identify central st of Front and work panda face centred over this st in duplicate stitch using Panda Chart. Attach 2 small black beads for eyes where indicated by the black circles on Chart. Use a length of Yarn F to embroider a circle around each bead. Weave in all loose ends securely and place Hat on doll.

SCARF

Cast on 5 sts using 3mm DPNs and Yarn F. Work in i-cord for 48cm.

Cast off.

Make 2 small pompoms using the fork method (www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0q-QHC_2cw): wrap Yarn M around outside of prongs, secure end, tie a length of Yarn M around the centre of wrapped yarn whilst on fork. Pull off fork, holding centre length of yarn and cut through loops. Trim each pompom neatly and attach to ends of i-cord using the length of Yarn M that is around the centre of each pompom.

Cast on 9 sts using 3mm needles and Yarn M.

Row 1 (WS) Purl.

Row 2 *Kfb; rep from * to end. [18 sts] Row 3 Purl.

Row 4 *K1, kfb; rep from * to end. [27 sts] Row 5 Purl.

Change to Yarn F.

Rows 6 to 11 Starting on a RS knit row work in st st.

Change to Yarn M.

Rows 12 and 13 Starting on a RS knit row work in st st.

Row 14 *K7, k2tog; rep from * to end. [24 sts] Row 15 Purl.

Row 16 *K6, k2tog; rep from * to end. [21 sts] Row 17 *K1, P1; rep from * to last st, K1. Row 18 *P1, K1, rep from * to last st, P1. Row 19 Rep Row 17. Cast off in rib.

FLAP

Cast on 10 sts using 3mm needles and Yarn F. Row 1 (RS) Knit.

Row 2 K1, P8, K1.

Rows 3 and 4 Rep Rows 1 and 2.

Row 5 K2tog, knit to last sts, k2tog. [2 sts dec’d] Row 6 K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rows 7 and 8 Rep Rows 5 and 6. [6 sts] Row 9 K2tog, K2, k2tog. [4 sts]

Row 10 Knit.

Cast off.

Gather around cast-on sts of Backpack Body and pull up tightly. Join seam and weave in ends. With seam at centre back, line up Flap with top of Backpack and sew tog. Use 2 small black buttons for eyes and embroider a straight line followed by a V for mouth in centre, using photograph as a guide. Attach a snap fastener to Flap, under where mouth is. Attach a spherical black button to top of each side to represent panda ears. Create 2 black twisted cords each approximat­ely 14cm long and attach to black base of bag at rear, with other end attached to top of bag where black section ends. Place backpack on doll to finish.
