Tension:

17 sts and 28 rows to 10 cm over pattern on 5 mm needles or the size required to give the correct tension.

Back

(Worked sideways)

Using 4 mm longer circular needle and thumb method cast on 99 sts. Working in rows proceed as follows:

1st row (RS): * K2, p2, rep from * to last 3 sts, k2, p1.

2nd row: K1, p2, * k2, p2, rep from * to end.

1st and 2nd rows set patt.

Work 18 rows more in patt.** Change to 5 mm needles and working in patt as set (throughout) cont until work measures 52 cm, ending with a WS row. Change to 4 mm longer circular needle and work 20 rows more. Cast off in patt.

Front

(Worked sideways)

Work as given for back to **. Change to 5 mm needles and working in patt as set (throughout) cont until work measures 18 cm, ending with a WS row.

Shape neck

Next row: Patt2tog (neck edge),

patt to end. 98 sts.

Next row: Patt.

Work 27 rows dec 1 st at neck edge in next and every foll alt row. 84 sts. Work 3 rows more without shaping. Work 29 rows inc 1 st at neck edge in next and every foll alt row, working inc sts in patt. 99 sts. Cont without shaping until work measures 52 cm, ending with a WS row. Change to 4 mm longer circular needle and work 20 rows more. Cast off in patt.

Neckband

Join shoulder seams. With RS facing, using 4 mm shorter circular needle pick up and knit 84 sts evenly around all neck edge. Place a marker between first and last sts to denote beg and end of rounds. 1st rnd. * K2, p2, rep from * to end. 1st rnd sets rib. Work 6 rnds more in rib. Cast off in rib.

Lower edge

With RS facing, using 4 mm longer circular needle pick up and knit 268 sts evenly all along straight side edge of back and front. Place a marker between first and last sts to denote beg and end of rounds. Working in rounds and rib as given for neckband work 45 rnds. Cast off in rib.

Block out garment to the measuremen­t given and place under damp cloths and leave until dry.

Shape shoulder

Shape sleeve top

Cast off 13 (13) 14 (14) 15 sts in patt at beg of next 4 (2) 4 (2) 4 rows. 39 (69) 43 (75) 47 sts.

Ties (both alike)

Using 5 mm needles cast on 57 sts. Knit 1 row. Cast off knitways (on WS).

Finishing

Fold the back in half and place a marker at the center back neck. Sew left shoulder seam, matching pattern to center back neck. You will have 4 sts on front left over, sew these to the other side of the marker. Sew right shoulder seam matching pattern to center back neck, sew over remaining 4 sts to other side of marker overlappin­g the left front. Place markers 25 (26) 27 (28) 29 cm, down from beg of shoulder shaping, fold sleeves in half lengthways, then placing sleeve top folds to shoulder seams, sew sleeves in position between markers. Measure 10 cm, from cast-on edge and sew up to armhole to form vents. Join short sleeve seams. Sew ties to opening edge of fronts using photograph as a guide.

Pin out jacket to the measuremen­ts given. Cover with clean, damp tea towels and leave until dry.
