Eyelet ankle socks

Summer’s here and so are ankle socks in pretty pastel colours. This eyelet pair by Jane Burns is sure to keep you looking and feeling cool all day!

ANKLE SOCKS

Note These socks have a folded cuff, so the sock begins with the outer cuff worked from the right side (as worn), then the work needs to be turned inside out so the inner cuff is worked from the right side (as worn).

INSTEP PATTERN

Round 1 Knit.

Round 2 Knit.

Round 3 K1 (0: 1), *k2tog, yo, K2; rep from * to last st, K1 (0: 1). Round 4 Knit.

Round 5 Knit.

Round 6 Knit.

Round 7 K3 (2: 3), *k2tog, yo, K2; rep from * to last 3 (2: 3) sts, ssk, yo, K1 (0: 1).

Round 8 Knit.

These 8 rounds form patt and are repeated.

SOCK OUTER CUFF

Cast on 60 (64: 68) sts using 2.5mm needles and join to work in the round, taking care not to twist stitches. PM to mark beg of round. Rounds 1 and 2 Knit.

Round 3 K0 (2: 4), *K2, yo, K1tbl, yo, K4, s2kpo, K2; rep from * 4 more times, K0 (2: 4).

Round 4 K0 (2: 4), *K3, K1tbl, K8; rep from * 4 more times, K0 (2: 4).

Rounds 5 to 8 Rep Rounds 3 and 4 twice.

Round 9 Purl.

Round 10 Knit.

Round 11 Purl.

Round 12 Knit.

Turn work inside out to work from the opposite side so the outer cuff will fold to the RS when finished.

INNER CUFF

Round 1 Knit. Rounds 2 to 6 *K1tbl, P1; rep from * to end.

Round 7 Knit. HEEL FLAP

The heel flap is worked over next 30 (32: 34) sts, turn at end of each row, leaving rem 30 (32: 34) sts on holder or spare needle. Row 1 (RS) *Sl1 purlwise, K1; rep from * to end.

Row 2 (WS) Sl1 purlwise, purl to end.

Rep Rows 1 and 2 until you have completed 30 (32: 32) rows in total.

TURN HEEL

Row 1 (RS) K16 (17: 18), ssk, K1, turn.

Row 2 (WS) Sl 1, P3, p2tog, P1, turn.

Row 3 Sl 1, K4, ssk, K1, turn.

Row 4 Sl 1, purl to 1 st before gap, p2tog, P1, turn.

Row 5 Sl 1, knit to 1 st before gap, ssk, K1, turn.

Rep Rows 4 and 5 until all you have worked all the heel sts, ending after a WS row and noting that depending on your size you may not need to work the final K1/P1 on the final rows. [16 (18: 18) heel sts]

GUSSET

Resume working in the round.

Next round With RS facing, K16 (18: 18) heel sts, pick up and knit 15 (16: 16) sts along side of the heel flap, pick up and knit 1 st at the corner to prevent hole, PM, work Round 1 of Instep patt across 30 (32: 34) instep sts, PM, pick up and knit 1 st at corner of heel flap to prevent hole, pick up and knit 15 (16: 16) sts along the side of the heel, K8 (9: 9) heel sts, PM to mark new beg of round. [78 (84: 86) sts]

SHAPE GUSSET

Dec round Knit to 3 sts before mrk, k2tog, K1, sl SM, work next round of Instep patt, sl SM, K1, ssk, knit to end. [2 sts dec’d] Next round Knit to mrk, sl SM, work next round of Instep patt, sl SM, knit to end.

Rep these 2 rounds until 60 (64: 68) sts remain.

FOOT

Set-up round Remove SM, knit to mrk, this is now the new beg of round.

Cont straight in patt as set until foot meas 3 (3.5: 4)cm less than desired foot length.

TOE

Dec round (K1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before mrk, k2tog, K1, slm) twice. [4 sts dec’d]

Next round Knit.

Rep these 2 rounds until 40 (44: 44) sts remain.

Rep only dec round until 20 (20: 20) sts remain.

FINISHING

Divide sts evenly on 2 needles and graft together using Kitchener stitch. Weave in ends. Block gently to measuremen­ts, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band.
