The classic fit cardigan has large pockets at the hip. It is knitted in a cotton blend that is also available in more vibrant colour changes if you wish to make more of a splash

Needles:

Size 4 mm

Circular needle size 4 mm (100 cm)

Stitch holder

Tension:

24 sts and 32 rows to 10 cm over stocking stitch on 4 mm needles, or the size required to give the correct tension.

Back

Using 4 mm needles and thumb method cast on 146 (158) sts.

1st row: * K2, p2, rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.

2nd row: P2, * k2, p2, rep from * to end. These 2 rows set 2x2 rib. Cont in 2x2 rib until work measures 11 cm, ending with a WS row. Proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: Purl.

These 2 rows set st-st. Working in st-st (throughout) cont until work measures 53 cm, ending with a WS row.

Shape armholes

Cast off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 136 (148) sts. Cast off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 128 (140) sts. Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 122 (134) sts.

Work 2 rows dec 1 st at each end of every row. 118 (130) sts.

Work 11 (13) rows dec 1 st at each end of next and every foll alt row. 106 (116) sts.

Cont without shaping until armholes measure 27 cm, ending with a WS row.

Cast off.

Pocket linings (both alike)

Using 4 mm needles and thumb method cast on 38 sts. Work in st-st for 21 cm, ending with a WS row. Leave these sts on a stitch holder.

Left front

Using 4 mm needles and thumb method cast on 63 (67) sts.

1st row: * K2, p2, rep from * to last 3 sts, k2, p1.

2nd row: K1, p2, * k2, p2, rep from * to end.

1st and 2nd rows set rib.

Cont in rib until work measures 11 cm, inc 1 st in center of last row, ending with a WS row. 64 (68) sts.** Working in st-st (throughout) cont until work measures 34 cm, ending with a WS row.

Place pocket.

Next row: K12 (16), slip next 38 sts onto a stitch holder, knit across 38 sts left on a stitch holder for first pocket lining, k14. 64 (68) sts.

Next row: Purl.

Cont until work measures 53 cm, ending with a WS row.

Shape armhole and neck ***Next row: Cast off 5 sts, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog (neck edge), k1. 58 (62) sts.

Shape neck and armhole

Working in st-st (throughout) inc 1 st at each end of 3rd and every foll 4th row to 134 sts. Cont without shaping until work measures 47 cm, ending with a WS row.

Shape sleeve top

Cast off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 124 sts.

Cast off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 116 sts.

Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 110 sts.

Work 24 rows dec 1 st at each end of every row. 62 sts. Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 10 rows. 32 sts. Cast off rem 32 sts.

Pocket borders (both alike)

With RS facing, using 4 mm needles work across 38 sts left on a stitch holder as follows:

Next row. Cast on 1 st, knit to end, cast on 1 st. 40 sts (cast on sts to be used for sewing pocket borders to fronts).

1st row: K1, * p2, k2, rep from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1.

2nd row: P1, k2, * p2, k2, rep from * to last st, p1. 1st and 2nd rows set rib.

Work 8 rows more in rib. Cast off in rib.

Border

Join shoulder seams. With RS facing, using 4 mm circular needle and commencing at lower edge of right front, pick up and knit 30 sts evenly along rib, 99 sts evenly along straight edge, 56 sts evenly along shaped edge, 64 (68) sts from cast off sts at back of neck, 56 sts evenly along shaped edge, 99 sts evenly along straight edge and 30 sts evenly along rib. 434 (438) sts. Commencing with 2nd row of 2x2 rib work 17 rows. Cast off in rib.

Finishing

Fold sleeves in half lengthways, then placing folds to shoulder seams, sew sleeves in position. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew pocket linings and pocket borders in position using cast on sts. Block out garment to the measuremen­t given and place under damp cloths and leave until dry.
