SWEATER WITH HALF BRIOCHE PATTERN

-

We love this lovely palest of blues as soon as the sun comes out. A true sign that spring is on its way, this shade of blue goes well with sun-kissed skin. Here, in a sweater with half brioche rib on the back and sleeves. The pattern works extremely well in pale blue and the softest wool blend we could find. 06 34-48 • •• • •

Pattern I: 3 mm needles: half brioche rib, odd no. of sts.

Row 1, RS: 1 edge st, * p1, k1 *, rep from * to *, ending with p1, 1 edge st.

Rows 2 + 4, WS: 1 edge st, * k1, p1 *, rep from * to *, ending with k1, 1 edge st.

Knit rows 1 – 4 once, then repeat rows 3 + 4.

Slip edge st at beg of each row, knit the edge st at the end of the row.

Pattern II: 2 mm needles: k1, p1.

Pattern III: 3 mm needles: stocking st = RS k, WS p.

Tip 1: Pieces made from silk / viscose should be knitted quite short, as they will tend to stretch with wear, growing longer.

Tip 2: Fully fashioned dec 1:

Right edge = 1 edge st, p1, k1 below, p1, k3tog working into the row below. Left edge = 1 double dec (sl1 k-wise, k2tog, psso) working into the k sts of the row below, p1, k1 below, p1, 1 edge st.

Tip 3: Fully fashioned inc:

Right edge = 1 edge st, k1, inc 1 k-wise tbl. Left edge = inc 1 k-wise tbl, k1, 1 edge st.

Tip 4: Fully fashioned dec 2:

Right edge = 1 edge st, k1, k2tog. Left edge = sl1, k1, psso, k1, 1 edge st.

Back

Cast on 181 (199) sts with 3 mm needles. Knit in pattern I. After 6 cm work fully fashioned dec to shape sides, dec 2 sts at each end of every 8th row 12 times (see tip 2) = 133 (151) sts.

Armholes: At 30 cm from cast-on (measured hanging), cast off 2 sts at each end of the row, then work fully fashioned dec for raglan: dec 2 sts on at each end of every 6th row 6 times and every 8th row 5 (7) times (see tip 2). When raglan measures 17 (19) cm cast off 1 st at each end of every other row 18 (20) times for shoulders. Cast off the rem 49 (55) sts for the neck.

Front

Cast on 101 (123) sts with 2 mm needles. Knit in pattern II, beginning with k1. After 6 cm change to 3 mm needles and knit in pattern III, decreasing 23 (27) sts over the first row = 78 (96) sts. To shape sides, inc 1 st at each end of every other row 22 times (see tip 3) = 122 (140) sts.

Armholes: At 30 cm cast off 2 sts at each end of the row, then work fully fashioned dec for raglan: dec 1 st at each end of every other row 16 (16) times and every 4th row 4 (8) times (see tip 4). When front measures 47 (49) cm cast off at armhole edges for shoulders: 3 sts 6 times (3 sts 3 times + 4 sts 3 times). At the same time, as you begin shoulder shaping, cast off the middle 30 (34) sts, then cast off at neck edge either side on every other row, another 3 sts once, 2 sts once and 1 st once.

Left sleeve

Cast on 57 (67) sts with 3 mm needles. Knit in pattern I. To shape sides, inc 1 st at each end of every 12th row 16 times = 89 (99) sts. Incorporate the new sts into the pattern.

Sleeve cap: When sleeve measures 42 cm cast off 2 sts at each end of the row, then work fully fashioned dec for raglan: dec 2 sts at each end of every 6th row 6 times and every 8th row 6 times (every 6th row 14 times) (see tip 2). When raglan measures 17 (19) cm work fully fashioned dec at the right edge, dec 2 sts on every 12th row 3 times (every 10th row 4 times) (see tip 2). Then, at 67 (69) cm from cast-on edge, cast off at the left edge on every other row: 5 sts 5 times + 6 sts once.

Right sleeve

Knit to mirror the left sleeve.

Finishing

Close seams, using short sts to sew up the raglan seams.

Neckband: With the circular needle, pick up 148 (166) sts (front = 45 (53) sts, back = 45 (51) sts, sleeves = 29 (31) sts 06 Schematics each). Knit pattern II in the rnd. When neckband measures 3 cm cast off all sts loosely, patternwise.
