Kid’s Fair Isle cardigan

A sprinkling of wooden buttons finishes this vintage cardigan, complete with dancing children and polka dot Fair Isle. By Sarah Hatton

Note

The body is worked bottom up in one piece to the armholes, then divided to work the front and back separately while shaping the raglan seams. Check your tension; you may need to adjust needles up a size when working the chain and body charts if your tension is too tight.

BODY

Cast on 175 (179: 189: 193: 205) sts using 2.75mm needles and

Yarn A.

Change to Yarn B.

Row 1 (RS) *P1, K1; rep from * to last st, P1. Row 2 (WS) K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to end. These 2 rows set rib.

Work in rib until work meas 4 (4: 5: 5: 5)cm, ending with WS row.

Change to 3.25mm needles and Yarn A.

Beg with a knit row, work 2 (2: 4: 4: 4) rows in st st. SET CHAIN CHART

Row 1 (RS) Using Yarn B K1 (3: 0: 2: 0), work Row 1 of Chain Chart to last 1 (3: 0: 2: 0) sts, using Yarn B K1 (3: 0: 2: 0).

Row 2 (WS) Using Yarn A P1 (3: 0: 2: 0), work Row 2 of Chain Chart to last 1 (3: 0: 2: 0) sts, using Yarn A P1 (3: 0: 2: 0).

Row 3 Rep Row 1.

Using Yarn A, work 2 rows in st st. SET BODY CHART

(WS) Using Yarn A P3 (5: 2: 4: 2), reading from left to right in st st work Row 1 of Body Chart to last 3 (5: 2: 4: 2) sts, using Yarn A P3 (5: 2: 4: 2).

Row 2 (RS) Using Yarn A K3 (5: 2: 4: 2), work Row 2 of Body Chart to last 3 (5: 2: 4: 2) sts, using Yarn A K3 (5: 2: 4: 2).

These 2 rows set Body Chart position.

Work 13 further rows to complete Body Chart. Using Yarn A, work 2 rows in st st.

Rep Rows 1 to 3 of Chain Chart as previously set. SET MAIN PATT Row 1 (WS) Using Yarn A, purl.

Row 2 (RS) Using Yarn A, knit.

Row 3 Using Yarn A P3 (1: 2: 0: 2), using Yarn B P1, *using Yarn A P3, using Yarn B P1; rep from * to last 3 (1: 2: 0: 2) sts, using Yarn A P3 (1: 2: 0: 2).

Row 4 Using Yarn A, knit.

Row 5 Using Yarn A, purl.

Row 6 Using Yarn A K1 (3: 0: 2: 0), using Yarn B K1, *using Yarn A K3, using Yarn B K1; rep from * to last 1 (3: 0: 2: 0) sts, using Yarn A K1 (3: 0: 2: 0).

These 6 rows set patt. Cont in patt throughout.

Patt until Body meas 26 (28: 29: 31: 32) cm, ending with WS row.
