GUY FAWKES TEA COSY

Note Divide Yarn A and Yarn B into two balls so that the yarn can be used held double to form one strand. Use the Chart for the gunpowder sign which is worked in Fair Isle, starting with a RS row.

MAIN COSY

Cast on 28 sts using 5.5mm needles and Yarn A held double. Row 1 (RS) *K3, P1; rep from * to end.

Row 2 *K1, P3; rep from * to end.

Rows 3 to 6 Rep the last 2 rows twice more.

Join Yarn B held double. Do not cut Yarn A. Rows 7 to 10 Knit using Yarn B.

Break Yarn B and cont with Yarn A held double. Row 11 Knit.

Row 12 *K1, P3; rep from * to end.

Row 13 *K3, P1; rep from * to end.

Rows 14 to 23 Rep the last 2 rows, five more times. Row 24 *K1, P3; rep from * to end.

Join Yarn B held double. Do not cut Yarn A. Rows 25 to 28 Knit using Yarn B.

Break Yarn B and cont with Yarn A held double. Row 29 Knit.

Row 30 Purl.**

Place the sts on a stitch holder.

Work a second main cosy from start to **.

TEA COSY TOP

Work across the cosy front and back, to join together using Yarn A as follows.

Row 1 *K5, k2tog, rep from * to end. [48 sts]

Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 Purl.

Row 3 *K4, k2tog, rep from * to end. [40 sts]

Row 5 *K3, k2tog, rep from * to end. [32 sts]

Row 7 *K2, k2tog, rep from * to end. [24 sts]

Row 9 *K1, k2tog, rep from * to end. [16 sts]

Row 11 *K2tog, rep from * to end. [8 sts]

Thread yarn end through rem sts and pull to tighten.

With the front and back RS together, sew about 9.5cm from the top down the side seam on both sides. At the bottom of each side seam, sew about 3cm upwards, leaving holes for the teapot handle and spout. Put this part of the tea cosy onto the teapot as it is easier to sew things into place when the tea cosy is on the pot.

BARREL TOP

Cast on 56 sts using 5.5mm needles and Yarn A held double. Row 1 (RS) *K3, P1; rep from * to end.

Row 2 *K1, P3; rep from * to end.

Rows 3 to 6 Rep the last 2 rows twice more.

Join Yarn B held double. Do not cut Yarn A. Row 7 *K2, k2tog; rep from * to end. [42 sts] Rows 8 to 10 Knit.

Break Yarn B and cont with Yarn A held double.

Row 11 *K5, k2tog; rep from * to end. [36 sts]

Row 12 P2, *p2tog, P4; rep from * to last 4 sts, p2tog, P2. [30 sts] Row 13 *K3, k2tog; rep from * to end. [24 sts]

Row 14 P1, *p2tog, P2; rep from * to last 3 sts, p2tog, P1. [18 sts] Row 15 *K1, k2tog; rep from * to end. [12 sts]

Row 16 *P2tog; rep from * to end. [6 sts]

Thread yarn end through rem sts and pull to tighten.

With RS together, sew row-end edges together taking care to line up the colour changes. Turn RS out and lightly stuff the top. Place the barrel top with cast-on edge down on top of the Main Cosy. The cast-on edge of barrel top should rest on the row above the last Yarn B stripe. With mattress stitch, sew into place. You may want to add more stuffing as you go.

BARREL SIGN

Cast on 40 sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn C.

Rows 1 and 2 Purl.

Starting with a knit row and working in st st, use the Fair Isle technique to work Rows 1 to 4 from Chart A. Odd rows (RS) are worked right to left and even rows (WS) are worked left to right.

Break Yarn D and cont in Yarn C. Rows 7 and 8 Knit. Cast off.

Weave in ends.

To finish the sign, use a length of Yarn D to embroider the cross of the ‘N’, the centre bar of the ‘E’ and the leg of the ‘R’.Pin and sew the sign centrally on the middle section of the main cosy.

FUSE

Cast on 16 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn C. Row 1 (RS) Knit. Cast off.

Sew cast-on and cast-off edges together.

SPARK

Cast on 8 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn J.

Row 1 (RS) Knit.

Thread yarn end through rem sts and pull to tighten. Bring the row ends around to make a circle. Sew the row-end edges together. Sew the centre of the Spark to one end of the Fuse, and then sew the other end of the Fuse to the top of the Barrel.

GUY FAWKES HEAD

Cast on 8 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn E.

Row 1 (RS) *Kfb; rep from * to end. [16 sts]

Rows 2, 4 and 6 Purl.

Row 3 *K1, kfb; rep from * to end. [24 sts]

Row 5 *K2, kfb; rep from * to end. [32 sts]

Row 7 *K3, kfb; rep from * to end. [40 sts]

Rows 8 to 18 Starting with a purl row, work in st st.

Row 19 *K3, k2tog; rep from * to end. [32 sts]

Rows 20, 22 and 24 Purl.

Row 21 *K2, k2tog; rep from * to end. [24 sts]

Row 23 *K1, k2tog; rep from * to end. [16 sts] Row 25 *K2tog; rep from * to end. [8 sts]

Thread yarn end through rem sts and pull to tighten. With RS together, sew the row ends together, turn

RS out and stuff.

HAIR

Cast on 32 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn F.

Rows 1 to 18 Starting with a knit row, work in st st.

Row 19 *K4, k2tog; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2. [27 sts] Rows 20, 22, 24 and 26 Purl.

Row 21 *K3, k2tog; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2. [22 sts]

Row 23 K2, *k2tog, K2; rep from * to end. [17 sts]

Row 25 *K1, k2tog; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2. [12 sts] Row 27 *K2tog; rep from * to end. [6 sts]

Thread yarn end through rem sts and pull to tighten.

Pin the top of the Hair to the top of the Head and sew into place. Allow the cast-on edge of the Hair to roll upward to create a curl.

BEARD

Cast on 20 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn F.

Row 1 *K2tog; rep from * to end. [10 sts]

Rows 2 to 4 Starting with a purl row, work in st st.

Row 5 *K2tog; rep from * to end. [5 sts]

Row 6 Purl.

Row 7 Knit.

Thread yarn end through rem sts and pull to tighten. Sew row-end edges together. Pin and sew to the face so it sticks out slightly.

NOSE

Cast on 6 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn E.

Row 1 (RS) Knit.

Row 2 P1, (p2tog) twice, P1. [4 sts]

Row 3 Knit.

Thread yarn end through rem sts and pull to tighten. Sew row-end edges together. Pin and sew to the face.

MOUSTACHE

Cast on 12 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn F. Row 1 Knit. Cast off.

Sew cast-on and cast-off edges together. Find the centre of the Moustache and sew this directly below the Nose. With a length of

Yarn D, embroider eyes.

HAT UPPER

Cast on 42 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn D.

Rows 1 to 6 Starting with a knit row, work in st st.

Row 7 *K5, k2tog; rep from * to end. [36 sts]

Rows 8 to 10 Starting with a purl row, work in st st.

Row 11 *K4, k2tog; rep from * to end. [30 sts]

Rows 12 to 14 Starting with a purl row, work in st st.

Row 15 *K3, k2tog; rep from * to end. [24 sts]

Row 16 Purl.

Row 17 *K2, k2tog; rep from * to end. [18 sts]

Row 18 Purl.

Row 19 *K1, k2tog; rep from * to end. [12 sts]

Row 20 *P2tog; rep from * to end. [6 sts]

Thread yarn end through rem sts and pull to tighten. With RS together, sew the row ends together, turn RS out and leave to one side until the Hat Brim is made.

HAT BRIM

Cast on 42 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn D.

Row 1 (RS) K3, *kfb, K6; rep from * to last 4 sts, kfb, K3. [48 sts] Row 2 *P7, pfb; rep from * to end. [54 sts]

Row 3 K4, *kfb, K8; rep from * to last 5 sts, kfb, K4. [60 sts] Row 4 *P9, pfb; rep from * to end. [66 sts]

Row 5 K5, *kfb, K10; rep from * to last 6 sts, kfb, K5. [72 sts] Row 6 Knit.

Row 7 K5, *k2tog, K10; rep from * to last 7 sts, k2tog, K5. [66 sts] Row 8 *P9, p2tog; rep from * to end. [60 sts]

Row 9 K4, *k2tog, K8; rep from * to last 6 sts, k2tog, K4. [54 sts] Row 10 *P7, p2tog; rep from * to end. [48 sts]

Row 11 K3, *k2tog, K6; rep from * to last 5 sts, k2tog, K3. [42 sts] Cast off.

Bring the row-end edges around to meet and with RS facing and using mattress stitch, sew the row-end edges together. With WS together, fold along Row 6. Over sew the cast-on and cast-off edges of the Hat Brim together. With the seam in the hat upper and the hat brim aligned, sew the cast-on edge of the Hat Upper inside the Hat Brim. Stuff the Hat Upper. With the seam at the back, pin and sew the hat to the Head.

TORSO

Cast on 80 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn G.

Row 1 (RS) *K2, P2; rep from * to end.

Rows 2 to 5 Rep Row 1, four more times.

Row 6 *P2tog; rep from * to end. [40 sts]

Rows 7 to 20 Starting with a knit row, work in st st.

Row 21 K7, kfb, K4, kfb, K14, kfb, K4, kfb, K7. [44 sts] Rows 22 to 24 Starting with a purl row, work in st st.

Row 25 K7, k2tog, K4, k2tog, K14, k2tog, K4, k2tog, K7. [40 sts] Rows 26, 28, 30, 32 and 34 Purl.

Row 27 K7, k2tog, K2, k2tog, K14, k2tog, K2, k2tog, K7. [36 sts] Row 29 K7, (k2tog) twice, K14, (k2tog) twice, K7. [32 sts] Row 31 *K2, k2tog; rep from * to end. [24 sts]

Row 33 *K1, k2tog; rep from * to end. [16 sts] Cast off.

With RS together, fold in half so that the row ends meet. Sew the row ends together. Fold the body flat so that the seam you have just sewn runs down the centre back of the body and sew the cast-off edge together. Turn RS out, stuff and flatten. Put to one side whilst other body parts are made.

COLLAR

Cast on 56 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn G. Row 1 (RS) *K2, P2; rep from * to end.

Row 2 Cast off 6 sts, P1, *K2, P2; rep from * to end. [50 sts] Row 3 Cast off 6 sts, P1, *K2, P2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2. [44 sts]

Row 4 Cast off 6 sts, K1, *P2, K2; rep from * to end. [38 sts] Row 5 Cast off 6 sts, K1, *P2, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts, P2. [32 sts]

Row 6 *K2tog, p2tog; rep from * to end. [16 sts]

Row 7 *K2tog; rep from * to end. [8 sts]

Thread yarn end through rem sts and pull to tighten. Bring the cast-off edges around to meet. With RS facing and using mattress stitch, sew the cast-off edges together. With the seam of the torso facing you, pin and sew the Collar to the torso so that the top part of the Collar is on the top seam of the torso and so that the point of the collar comes down and follows the centre seam of the torso. Sew the head to the top of the Collar.

LEGS

Cast on 20 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn D. Row 1 (RS) Kfb, K7, (kfb) 4 times, K7, kfb. [26 sts] Row 2 Knit.

Rows 3 to 6 Starting with a knit row, work in st st. Row 7 K9, (k2tog) 4 times, K9. [22 sts]

Row 8 P6, cast off 10 sts, P5. [12 sts] Rows 9 to 16 Starting with a knit row, work in st st. Rows 17 to 20 Starting with a purl row, work in st st.

Break Yarn D and join Yarn H.

Row 21 Knit.

Row 22 *P1, pfb; rep from * to end. [18 sts] Rows 23 to 28 Starting with a knit row, work in st st. Row 29 *K2, kfb; rep from * to end. [24 sts] Rows 30 to 36 Starting with a purl row, work in st st.*** Row 37 Cast off 6 sts, knit to end. [18 sts]

Row 38 Purl.

Place sts on a stitch holder.

Work a second leg in the same way from start to ***. Row 37 Knit. Row 38 Cast off 6 sts, purl to end. [18 sts]

JOINING THE LEGS

Row 39 Knit across the sts on the needle, slide the sts from the first leg onto the left-hand needle, and knit across them. [36 sts] Rows 40 to 46 Starting with a purl row, work in st st. Cast off.

Using mattress stitch, sew the holes in the top of the foot flap closed. Fold the cast-on edge in half and again with mattress stitch, sew the cast-on edge to itself to form the sole of the boot. With RS together, sew the row-end edges of each Leg up to the ‘cast off 6 sts’ point. Turn legs RS out. With RS together, sew along the cast-off 6 sts, sewing the two Legs together. Finally, with RS together, sew the row-end edges of the seat part of the trousers together. Stuff the Legs evenly and mould into a nice shape. Push the cast-off part of the Legs into the cast-on end of the Torso and sew the cast-off edge of the trousers to Row 6 of the torso. You may need to add extra stuffing as you go.

ARMS (MAKE 2)

Cast on 7 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn G. Row 1 (RS) *Kfb; rep from * to end. [14 sts] Rows 2 to 18 Starting with a purl row, work in st st. Row 19 K2tog, K10, k2tog. [12 sts]

Rows 20 to 30 Starting with a purl row, work in st st. Row 31 K2tog, K8, k2tog. [10 sts]

Row 32 Knit.

Break Yarn G and join Yarn E.

Row 33 K2, *k2tog, K2; rep from * to end. [8 sts] Rows 34 to 36 Starting with a purl row, work in st st. Row 37 *K2tog; rep from * to end. [4 sts]

Row 38 Purl.

Thread yarn end through rem sts and pull to tighten. With RS together, sew row ends together. Turn RS out and lightly stuff the arm, but do not stuff the hand. Sew a row of running stitches around the cast-on edge, draw up and fasten off. Pin and sew the arms to the top of the body.

SLEEVE CAPS (MAKE 2)

Cast on 18 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn G. Rows 1 to 4 Starting with a knit row, work in st st. Cast off.

Fold the strip in half lengthways, with WS together and sew the cast-on edge to the cast-off edge. Pin and sew the arm bands around the top of each arm so that the cast-on and cast-off edges of the arm band are attached to the torso.

FINISHING

Stand Guy Fawkes around the back of the barrel of gunpower. Pin and tack his Legs and torso to the Barrel where they touch.
