Garter stitch: Knit (k) all rows.

Chain edge (lower edge and front edges):

The first stitch in every row is knitted (k) and the last stitch in every row is slipped purlwise with the yarn forward.

Double stitch: After turning, at the start of the next row, bring yarn forward. Insert right needle into the first stitch from the right, slip this stitch and the yarn off the needle. Pull the working tail tightly over the needle so that this stitch lies double over the right needle. Next row: work these two loops together knitwise.

The lower part of the waistcoat is knitted sideways.

Start work at the front edge of the right front:

Using needles size 4 mm, cast on 32 (34) 36 and work garter stitch. The first row (r) is a wrong side (WS) r.

Work the edge stitch on the left side of the work as a chain edge. When the work measures 11 (12) 13 cm, work a turning row for the slope at the right-hand side as follows: In the next WS r, work 10 (11) 11 sts, turn and work a double stitch. Work back on the right side (RS). In the next WS r, work 20 (21) 22 sts, turn and work a double stitch. Work back on the right side (RS). * In the next WS r, work the first 29 (31) 33 sts, turn and work a double stitch. Work back on the right side (RS).* Repeat from * to * twice. On the next WS r, work the first 20 (21) 22 sts, turn and work a double stitch. Work back on the right side (RS). On the next WS r, work the first 10 (11) 11 sts, turn and work a double stitch. Work back on the right side (RS). Now work across all sts again. When the work measures 38 (41) 44 cm (measured on the long side), work the turning r for the slope on the left-hand side in the same way. Now work across all sts again. When the work measures 54 (58) 62 cm (measured on the long side), cast off.

The top of the fronts and back are worked together up to the armholes.

Using needles size 4 mm, pick up 80 (86) 94 sts along the short side of the lower part of the waistcoat. Work in garter stitch. Work the edge stitches on both sides as chain edges. Set a stitch marker (sm) at each side seam = 20 (21) 23 sts for each front and 40 (44) 48 sts for the back. When you have worked 1 (2) 3 cm, divide the work at the side seams for the armhole. Work each part separately.

Right front

Neck shaping: When the work measures 9,5 (11,5) 13,5 cm from the transition, cast off 1 x 6 (6) 7 sts, then 1 x 2 sts and 1 x 1 st on alternate rows. When the work measures 11 (13) 15 cm from the transition, cast off the remaining (rem) 11 (12) 13 sts at the shoulder.

Back

When the work measures 9,5 (11,5) 13,5 cm from the transition, cast off the middle 12 (14) 16 sts. Now work each side separately.

Neck edge shaping: On alternate rows, cast off 1 x 2 sts and 1 x 1 st. When the work measures 11 (13) 15 cm from the transition, cast off the rem 11 (12) 13 sts at the shoulder. Work the other side in reverse.

Left front

Work the left front like the right front, only in reverse.

Finishing

Sew shoulder seams. Crochet 1 r along the fronts and neck edges as follows: Attach yarn. * 1 slip stitch (sl st), 3 chain (ch), skip (sk) 2 rs or 1 st * and repeat from

* to *. Last stitch: 1 sl st. Crochet around the armholes in the same way.

Loosely crochet a cord as follows: 2 ch, 1 dc into 2nd ch from hook. Turn the work anti-clockwise = towards you, so that you can see the WS and the yarn tail is forward. Insert hook into the horizontal st loop on the left and pull the yarn through = 2 loops on the hook, yarn over hook (yoh), and then pull the yarn through both loops = 1 dc. * Turn the work again anti-clockwise = so that you can see the WS and the yarn tail is forward. Insert hook into the horizontal st loop on the left and pull the yarn through = 2 loops on the hook, yarn over hook (yoh), and then pull the yarn through both loops = 1 dc *.

Repeat from * to * until the cord measures 20 (22) 24 cm. Break yarn. Work three more cords in the same way. Sew a cord to each front at the neck and at the transition between the upper and lower parts of the waistcoat.
