MAKING UP

Each doll is made up in a similar way, but with different decorative finishes. Use your yarn tails for seaming and hide any yarn tails inside the doll. Use mattress stitch to sew seams unless otherwise specified (a one stitch seam allowance is given in the pattern).

Head and Body Seam by sewing side edges tog from cast-off sts at top of head down to cast-on edge. This seam runs down centre back of doll. Firmly stuff head; you may find it helpful to use the round end of a knitting needle to poke filling tightly into head. Lightly stuff body leaving neck unstuffed. Embroider nose and ears using Yarn A. Each ear is four small vertical stitches on side of head just below first row of helmet. For nose, embroider four small horizontal stitches on centre front over 3rd Yarn A row below helmet. Sew 4mm black beads onto head for eyes on each side of nose. Embroider mouth using black embroidery thread in a V shape below nose. To define legs, thread cast-on tail onto a tapestry needle and sew through layers of the body in a vertical running stitch over the first 5 rows. Secure the yarn by going over the last stitch again and bury yarn tail inside body.

Arms Sew side edges of arm tog and gather cast-on sts. Sew top of each arm onto side of body.

Feet Sew side edges of foot tog and oversew cast-on edge tog at front of foot. Place 2 feet together side by side, stand doll on top of feet and pin in position. Using yarn to match trousers, sew feet onto bottom of legs catching a stitch on the foot to a stitch on the cast-on edge of the legs all the way around.

Chin straps Using Yarn G and a 2.5mm crochet hook, chain 20 and fasten off. Sew the ends onto doll just in front of each ear. Add a tiny spot of strong glue on chin to keep chin strap in position on head.

Helmet brim Embroider helmet brim using yarn to match helmet and a chain stitch all around the first helmet row.

FINISHING

White Helmet Bugler Embroider body using Yarn B and long stitches. Starting on front left side above belt, take yarn over shoulder and down to back left side, then do the same from right side so that the yarn crosses over at front and back. Embroider a horizontal line above the brim of the helmet in gold embroidery thread.

Black Helmet Bugler Embroider horizontal lines on front of body in gold embroidery thread.

White Helmet Drummer Embroider body in Yarn B in the same way as the White Helmet Bugler. Embroider an arrow shape on the helmet in gold embroidery thread.

Blue Helmet Drummer Embroider horizontal and vertical lines on helmet in gold embroidery thread, and buttons on body in 4 small horizontal stitches.

Bugle Sew side edges tog and weave in yarn tails. For handle, using Yarn G and a 2.5mm crochet hook chain 8 (see page 94) and fasten off. Sew the ends onto top of the bugle. Insert a cocktail stick trimmed to 3cm long inside the skinny end of the bugle to strengthen it, and add a small spot of glue inside to secure it. Place finished bugle over hand of doll, and use a spot of glue on hand to secure it.

Small Drums Sew side edges tog, adding stuffing as you go (don’t overstuff), and gather cast-on sts tog. Embroider triangle shapes in Yarn E for the green drum or Yarn F for the red drum. The base of each triangle is 2 sts wide. For the drum straps, using Yarn B or Yarn E and a 2.5mm crochet hook chain 24 (see page 94) and fasten off. Sew the ends onto side of the drum. Place the drum strap over the body.

Large Drums Make up in the same way as small drums, embroidering triangles in Yarn E with base of each triangle being 3 or 4 sts wide (whichever you prefer).

Drumsticks Trim cocktail sticks to 3cm long, add a spot of glue on one end and insert into the drummer doll’s hand. For the larger drums, trim cocktail sticks to 5cm, and glue onto the top of the Large Drum crossing the sticks over in a X shape. Insert wire bauble hangers under a stitch on the top of each helmet/Large Drum.
