Knitting needles:

Size 4 mm

Tension:

18 sts and 22 rows to 10 cm, over pattern on 4 mm needles, or the size required to give the correct tension.

It is essential to work to the stated tension to achieve the correct size of garment.

Using 4 mm needles and thumb method cast on 45 sts.

1st row. *K1, P1, rep from * to last st, k1.

2nd row. P1, *k1, p1, rep from * to end.

These 2 rows set 1x1 rib. Cont in 1x1 rib until work measures 22 cm, ending with a RS row.

Next row. P3, (inc in next st, p1) 20 times, p2. 65 sts. Place coloured markers at each end of last row. Proceed as follows:

1st row. K2, *k1, yo, s1, k1, psso, k5, k2tog, yo, rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.

2nd row. *P5, k5, rep from * to last

5 sts, p5.

3rd row. K4, *yo, s1, k1, psso, k3, k2tog, yo, k3, rep from * to last st, k1.

4th row. P6, *k3, p7, rep from * to last 9 sts, k3, p6.

5th row. *K5, yo, s1, k1, psso, k1, k2tog, yo, rep from * to last 5 sts, k5.

P2, (p2tog, p1) 20 times, p3. 45 sts. Commencing with 2nd row of 1x1 rib cont in rib for 22 cm, ending with a WS row. Cast off in rib.

Finishing

Fold in half lengthways, join rib seams at each end to markers. Block out garment to the measurement given and place under damp cloths and leave until dry.
