Knitting needles: Size 6 and 7 mm

Tension:

13 sts and 21 rs in seed stitch on needle size 7 mm = 10 x 10 cm.

Garter stitch: Every row: k to end.

Check pattern Work in seed stitch. Follow the pattern chart. The pattern chart shows how the stitches look on the right side (RS) of the work.

Read RS rows from right to left. Read wrong side (WS) rows from left to right.

Use one ball of yarn for each coloured field, i.e. twist the strands together on the WS to avoid holes. Work one edge stitch at each side in the colour shown in the chart. Repeat rows 1-26.

NB: The narrow stripes in chocolate are embroidered (see finishing).

Back

Using needles size 7 mm and a remnant of smooth yarn, cast on 93 sts. Work the check pattern with the original yarn. Work one edge stitch, first 6 sts of chart, work the 18 sts of the pattern repeat 4 times, end as shown in the chart, work one edge stitch with the original yarn.

Armhole shaping: When the work measures 62 cm (= 130 rs or pattern r 26), at each side and in alternate rows, cast off 7 sts and then 6 sts = 67 sts.

Shoulder shaping: When the work measures 77 cm (= 162 rs or pattern r 6), at each side and in alternate rows, cast off 2 sts, 10 times in all. Cast off remaining 27 sts at the neck edge.

Lower edge: Pick up the cast-on row (in the yarn remnant) and slide the stitches onto needle size 6 mm as you go. Using col 29 leather brown, work 12 rs of garter stitch, starting with a RS row. Cast off knitwise.

Left front

Using needles size 7 mm and a remnant of smooth yarn, cast on 44 sts. Work the check pattern with the original yarn as shown in the pattern chart. Work one edge stitch, first 6 sts of chart, work the 18 sts of the pattern repeat twice, work one edge stitch.

Armhole shaping: When the work measures 62 cm, cast off at the armhole as back.

Neck shaping: At the same time, when the work measures 62 cm, dec 1 st at the left-hand side of the work. Then dec 1 st in every 4th row, 10 times in all.

When the work measures 86.5 cm (= 182 rows or pattern row 26), cast off the remaining 20 sts at the shoulder.

Lower edge: Work as back.

Right front

Work the right front like the left front, only reverse the shaping. This means that, after the edge st, you work the check pattern as follows: Work the last 11 sts of the pattern repeat, work the 18 sts of the pattern repeat, work the last 13 sts, 1 edge st.

Sleeves

Using needles size 7 mm and a remnant of smooth yarn, cast on 57 sts. Work the check pattern using the original yarn inside the edge stitch as shown in the chart, work pattern repeat twice, end r with 1 edge st.

Sleeve shaping: When the work measures 27 cm, increase (inc) 1 st at each side. Then inc 4 sts at each side, 4 times in all. Increase using the correct colour of yarn (= 67 sts).

Sleeve top shaping: When the work measures 37 cm (= 78 rs or pattern r 26), cast off 7 sts at each side. Then, in alternate rows, cast off 3 sts at each side and then cast off 4 sts at each side. Cast off the remaining 11 sts.

Lower edge: Work as back. Make second sleeve identical with the first.

Left front edge and collar

Using needles size 6 and col 29 leather brown, cast on 7 sts. Work in garter stitch, starting with a WS row.

Collar shaping: When the front edge measures 66 cm (stretch the work slightly), inc 1 st at the right-hand side of the work. Repeat in alternate rs 3 times and in every 4th row 11 times (= 22 sts). When the work measures 100 cm = centre back neck, leave the sts on a needle.

Right front edge and collar

Work as left front edge but reverse the shaping.

Finishing

Block all parts to stated measurements, dampen and leave to dry. In all the 11-stitch wide vertical stripes, embroider a row of chain stitch (2 knitted sts per chain) in the centre st. NB: Always sew under the purl stitch loop.

Sew all seams together. Set in sleeves.

Sew the remaining sts of the collar together using mattress stitch. Sew the front edges to the fronts starting at the bottom and 66 cm up on both sides. Sew the collar evenly along the remaining open edges.
