Knitting needles:

Size needles 4, 4 and 5 mm Cable needle

Tension:

17 stitches and 26 rows in stockinette stitch = 10 cm.

21 stitches and 36 rows in rib pattern = 10 cm.

24 stitches and 26 rows in Aran pattern = 10 cm.

Stockinette stitch: Knit in RS rows, purl in WS rows.

Rib pattern 1/1: RS: k1 and p1 in turn, in doing so slip all knitted st knitwise wyib, but do not work them. In WS rows work all sts, as they appear.

Cable A (2/2 RC): Slip 2k to cable nd and hold in back, k2 from left nd, k2 from cable nd.

Cable B (2/2 LC): Slip 2k to cable nd and hold in front, k2 from left nd, k2 from cable nd.

2/1 LC: Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, p1, then knit sts from cable needle.

1/2 RC: Slip 1 st to cable needle and hold in back, k2, then purl st from cable needle.

Aran pattern: Work according to chart or follow the instruction. The uneven rows are the RS rows and the even rows the WS rows. Work the st in WS rows as they appear.

Vertical buttonholes: For this you divide the work and make each side separately. First make the right side of border, then the left side. Then cont working over all st. In this case the buttonholes are worked over 4 rows – if the buttons are larger work more rows. But do not make the holes too large, because the buttons may slip out then.

Dst: Double stitch

Back

Using nd 4 mm cast on 97 (103) 107 (113) st and work 22 rows in rib pattern (see stitches and techniques) in foll way:

Row 1: 1 edge st, *p1, sl 1 st knitwise on right nd*, rep from * to *, end row with p1, k1.

Row 2: Knit all knitted sts, purl all purl sts.

Row 3: As row 1.

Row 4: As row 2, the pattern is repeated.

Work in this way 22 rows.

From row 23 on change to nd 4 mm and cont working st st. To compensate the different width between the border and the part in st st decrease evenly 4 sts in row 23 = 93 (99) 103 (109) sts.

Work in total 154 (156) 158 (160) rows in st st.

Cast off for shoulder bevel in row 155 (157) 159 (161) (= 58 (59) 60 (61 cm) on both sides 5 (5) 5 (5) sts, then in every alternate rows 4 (4) 4 (4)x 5 (5) 5 (6) sts and 1x 4 (6) 8 (6) sts = cast off the remaining 35 (37) 37 (39) sts.

The shoulder part is 29 (31) 33 (35) sts.

Left front

While knitting the front parts you work the border (11 sts) right away. The border of left front is at the left and corresponds with the last 11 sts of rib pattern (RS).

Cast on using nd 4 mm 55 (57) 59 (61) sts and work 22 rows in rib pattern as for the back. Then change to nd 4 mm. Try to work the 11 sts of the border tighter.

Row 23: Decrease evenly as for the back 2 (1) 1 (1) sts = 53 (56) 58 (60)

sts.

1 edge st, k 41 (43) 46 (48), *p1, sl 1 st knitwise*, rep from * to *, end with k1.

Row 24: K all knitted sts, purl all purled sts.

Row 25: 1 edge st, k 41 (43) 46 (48),

*p1, sl 1 st knitwise*, rep from * to *, end with k1.

Row 26: As row 24.

Work in this way until row 31.

Compared to the part in st st the border shrinks vertically. With German Short Rows (GSR) this will be compensated. Work the 1st short row with Dst in row 32, then in every 10th row, in total 7 short rows until V-neck. That means, that you work 7x 2 more rows (short rows). Work as follows:

Row 32:

Step 1 (WS): 11 sts (1 edge st, k1, p1 alternating) for the border, turn work.

Step 2 (RS): Sl 1st purl st on right nd, pull yarn down tightly at back of work, then the double loop of Dst appears. Work remaining 10 sts as rib pattern in RS rows (sl knit st, but do not work it).

Step 3 (WS): Work all sts of front as

they appear and knit the Dst. Make 6 more German Short Rows (in every 10th row).

V-neck

The V-neck starts for all sizes in row 95 (RS). Knit the last 2 st before border together.

Row 95: 1 edge st, k 39 (42) 44

(46), k2tog, *p1, sl 1 st knitwise*, rep from * to *, p1, k1. Decrease this way in every 6th row 11 (12) 12 (12)x 1 st = in total 12 (13) 13 (13) sts.

For all sizes: At the same time in row 96 and following 4th rows work 4x 1 German Short Row. Then work the short rows again in every 10th row.

Cast off for shoulder bevel in row 155 (157) 159 (161) = 58 (59) 60 (61) cm 5 (5) 5 (5) sts, then in alternate rows 4 (4) 4 (4)x 5 (5) 5 (6) sts and 1x 4 (6) 8 (6) sts. Cont working the remaining 12 stitches for border (11 + 1 = 12 sts, because you need 1 st for sewing on the back neckline) in rib pattern 21 (23) 25 (26) rows.

Right front

As the left one, only mirror-inverted. Using nd 4 mm cast on 55 (57) 59 (61) sts and work 22 rows in rib pattern. The border is at the right end (the first 11 sts in RS rows and rib pattern).

The 4 vertical buttonholes are incorporated in the border and have a height of 4 rows. The 1st buttonhole starts in row 9, the others in row 43, 69 and 97.

Row 1–8: Work rib pattern.

Row 9 (RS): For the 1st buttonhole work the first 6 sts. Turn and work 3 more rows.

Note: If you work vertical buttonholes the last st must be a knit st. Now work the 2nd half of border. In row 13 work over all sts again.

Change to nd 4 mm.

Row 23: 1 edge st, *sl 1 knit st knitwise, p1*, rep from * to * 4x, k to end. At the same time decrease 2 (1) 1 (1) sts on this row = 53 (56) 58

(60) sts.

Row 24: Work all sts as they appear.

Row 25: 1 edge st, *sl 1 knitted st knitwise, p1*, rep from * to * 4x, k 42 (45) 47 (49).

Row 26: As row 24.

Cont in this way as for the left front (only mirror-inverted). Make the shoulder bevel in the same way and cont the border of 12 sts 21 (23) 25

(26) more rows.

Sleeve

Work 2.

Using nd 4 mm cast on 56 (58) 60 (62) sts and work 22 rows as for back and front parts in rib pattern. Change to nd 5 mm and cont as follows:

Row 23: 1 edge st, p 1 (2) 3 (4), *k8, p2, k8*, p2, k2, p2, k4, p2, k2, p2, rep from * to *, p 2 (3) 4 (5). Row 24 and all even rows: Work

all st as they appear.

Row 25: 1 edge st, p 1 (2) 3 (4),

*cable B, cable A, p2, cable B, cable A*, p2, k2, p2, cable A, p2, k2, p2, rep from * to *, p 2 (3) 4 (5). Row 27: 1 edge st, p 1 (2) 3 (4), *k8, p2, k8*, p2, 2/1 LC, 1/2 RC, 2/1 LC, 1/2 RC, p2, rep from * to *, p 2 (3) 4

(5).

Row 29: 1 edge st, p 1 (2) 3 (4),

*cable B, cable A, p2, cable B, cable A*, p3, cable B, k2, cable B, p3, rep from * to *, p 2 (3) 4 (5).. Row 31: 1 edge st, p 1 (2) 3 (4), *k8, p2, k8*, p2, 1/2 RC, 2/1 LC, 1/2 RC, 2/1 LC, p2, rep from * to *, p 2 ((3) 4

(5).

Row 33: As row 25. The pattern is repeated.

At the same time

Inc on row 33 1 st both sides, then in every 8th row 9x 1 st both sides = 76 (78) 80 (82) sts.

After 111 (111) 113 (113) rows cast off 5 sts both sides for top shaping, then in alternate rows 2x 5 and 4x 3 sts. Cast off remaining 22 (24) 26 (28) sts.

Pockets

Work 2.

For the pockets you only work the central part of pattern (see pattern repeat marked in black – pattern repeat = 36 sts/8 rows).

Using nd 4 mm cast on 36 sts and work 28 rows in Aran pattern, then 12 rows in rib pattern.

Cast off all sts on row 41.

Finishing

Block and dampen all parts. Sew on the pockets, sew side and shoulder seams. Sew sleeves in position. Join both parts of border (front, marked in red) and sew on back. Sew on buttons.
