Stocking stitch:

Knit (k) on right side (RS), purl (p) on wrong side (WS).

Cable (over 30 sts): Follow the pattern chart. Repeat rows (rs) 1-12.

Rib:

All RS rs: k1, p1 to end.

On WS rs: k over k and p over p.

Back

Using needles size 5 mm, cast on 91 (99) 105 (113) 119 sts and work 10 cm of rib.

Switch to needles size 6 mm and continue in stocking stitch.

Shoulder shaping: When the work measures 50 (52) 56 (59) 61 cm, in alternate rs, decrease (dec) 2x 2 and 7x 3 (9x 3) 6x 3 and 3x 4 (3x 3 and 6x 4) and 9x 4 sts on each side.

At the same time, when the work measures 56 (58) 62 (65) 67 cm, slide the centre 27 (29) 29 (31) 31 sts onto a stitch holder (neck edge). Now work each side separately.

Neck edge shaping: At the neck edge, cast off 4x 1 st in every row. Cast off remaining (rem) 3 (4) 4 (4) 4 sts.

Left front

Using needles size 5 mm, cast on 44 (48) 52 (56) 58 sts and work 10 cm of rib. The last st at the front edge is an edge stitch (k in every r). Sizes 44-46 and 48 only: At the beginning of the last RS r, dec 1 st = 44 (48) 51 (55) 58 sts.

Switch to needles size 6 mm, and work next WS r as follows: p11 (12) 14 (16) 17, k5, [p2 into next st, p1] 6x, p2 into next st, k5, p10 (13) 14 (16) 18 = 51 (55) 58 (62) 65 sts. Now distribute sts as follows: 10 (13) 14 (16) 18 sts stocking stitch, 30 sts cable, 11 (12) 14 (16) 17 sts stocking stitch. Continue with sts distributed as described above. When the work measures 49 (51) 54 (57) 59 cm, at 2 (2) 4 (4) 4 sts before shoulder shaping, slide the last 6 (7) 6 (7) 7 sts onto a stitch holder (neck edge). Cast off at the neck edge 6x 1 st in every r, then 3x 1 (3x 1) 4x 1 (4x 1) 4x 1 st in alternate rs, and then 1x 1 st in every 4th r.

Shoulder shaping: At the same time, when the work measures 50 (52) 56 (59) 61 cm, cast off 5x 3 and 4x 4 (2x 3 and 7x 4) 9x 4 (6x 4 and 3x 5) 3x 4 and 6x 5 sts. Cast off the remaining 4 (4) 5 (5) 5 sts.

Right front

Work as left front edge but reverse the shaping.

Work the first WS r after the rib as follows: p10 (13) 14 (16 (18), k5, [p2 into next st, p1] 6x, p2 into next st, k5, p11 (12) 14 (16) 17. Now distribute the stitches as follows: 11 (12) 14 (16) 17 sts stocking stitch, 30 sts cable, 10 (13) 14 (16) 17 sts stocking stitch. Continue with sts distributed as described above.

Sleeves

Using needles size 5 mm, cast on 41 (43) 45 (45) 47 sts and work 9 cm in rib. In the last RS r, dec 5 sts evenly = 36 (38) 40 (40) 42 sts. Switch to needles size 6 mm and continue in stocking stitch. The first r is a WS r.

Sleeve shaping: Inc 1 st at each side of the sleeve in every 4th r 4x, and in every 6th r 7x (in every 4th r 10x and in every 6th r 3x) in every 4th r 15x (in alternate rs 2x and in every 4th r 14x) in alternate rs 4x and in every 4th r 13x = 58 (64) 70 (72) 76 sts.

Sleeve top shaping: When the work measures 44 (44) 46 (46) 46 cm, in alternate rs and at both sides, cast off 1x 4 and then 3x 5 (3x 5 and then 1x 6) 1x 5 and then 3x 6 (4x 6) 3x 6 and then 1x 7 sts. Cast off remaining 20 (22) 24 (24) 26 sts.

Make second sleeve identical with the first.

Finishing

Block all parts to stated measurements, dampen and leave to dry. Sew the shoulder seams. Using needles size 5 mm, pick up evenly and work 85 (89) 91 (95) 95 sts (including the stitches on the spare needles) along the neck edge. Slide the right front stitches onto the needle. Work the left front stitches onto the needle. Work 8 rs of rib. Next WS r: Cast off in rib.

Button edge: Using needles size 5 mm, pick up 81 (85) 89 (93) 97 sts evenly. Work 8 rs of rib. Next r: Cast off in rib.

Buttonhole edge: Work as for button edge but work 5 buttonholes in 4th r as follows: 4 sts in rib * yarn over needle (yon), knit 2 together (k2tog) in rib, 16 (17) 18 (19) 20 sts in rib *, repeat from * to * 3 times, yon, k2tog in rib, 2 sts in rib.

Place stitch markers on the back and front 22 (22) 24 (26) 28 cm from the shoulder seam. Sew in sleeves between the stitch markers. Sew side and sleeve seams.
