■ A pair of 3 mm needles,
■ A pair of 4mm needles
■ 15cm zip, needle and thread
TENSION
Yarn used knits as DK to this tension: 22sts and 30 rows to meas 10x10cm (4x4in) over st st using 4mm needles

NOTE Slip all sl1 sts pwise.
FIRST EDGING
Cast on 61 sts using 3 mm needles and Yarn A. Row 1 K1, *sl1, K1; rep from * to end. Row 2 K1, *yf, sl1, yb, K1; rep from * to end. Row 3 K2, *sl1, K1; rep from * to last st, K1. Row 4 K2, *yf, sl1, yb, K1; rep from * to last st, K1.
BODY
Change to 4mm needles and Yarn B. Row 1 K1, *sl1, K1; rep from * to end. Row 2 K1, *yf, sl1, yb, K1; rep from * to end. Change to Yarn A. Row 3 K2, *sl1, K1; rep from * to last st, K1. Row 4 K2, *yf, sl1, yb, K1; rep from * to last st, K1. Continue working last 4 rows, which form the pattern for the pencil case body, until piece meas 13cm from cast-on edge, ending after a row 2.
SECOND EDGING
Change to 3 mm needles and Yarn A. Row 1 K2, *sl1, K1; rep from * to last st, K1. Row 2 K2, *yf, sl1, yb, K1; rep from * to last st, K1. Row 3 K1, *sl1, K1; rep from * to end. Row 4 K1, *yf, sl1, yb, K1; rep from * to end. Row 5 K2, *sl1, K1; rep from * to last st, K1. Row 6 K2, *yf, sl1, yb, K1; rep from * to last st, K1. Cast off.
TO MAKE UP
With WS facing, fold in half, bring the cast-off and cast-on edges together, join side seams using mattress stitch, and sew zip in place.
