Isn’t this the cutest little bonnet you’ve ever seen? With striking Fair Isle colourwork and a handy i-cord tie, this sweet knit is an autumn essential. It’s small and simple, so you can whip one up in no time, making it the perfect last-minute gift. You’ll be happy to know there are bootees to match, too – just turn over the page to knit them!

HAT

Cast on 76 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn A.

Work 4 rows of K1, P1 rib.

Change to 4½mm needles.

Next row Begin working from row 1 of Chart, reading all odd number (RS) rows from right to left, and all even number (WS) rows from left to right, repeating 4 st pattern 19 times across row, then working the last st as for st 1. Last row sets Chart placement.

Continue to work Chart as set until you have worked rows 1–10 of Chart, then rep rows 5–10 of Chart until work meas 13cm from cast-on edge, ending with RS facing for next row.

Next row Keeping chart patt correct throughout, cast off 30 sts, work 16 sts from Chart, cast off 30 sts.

BACK GUSSET

With WS facing rejoin yarn to centre sts and cont in patt as set on these 16 sts until the work measures 11cm. Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Block work following instructio­ns on ball band and weave in all loose ends. Join the cast-off edges of the hat to the sides of the back gusset.

I-CORD

Cast on 3 sts using 4½mm DPNs and Yarn A.

Row 1 Knit.

Without turning the work, slide sts to other end of needle, wrap yarn around back of work.

Rep row 1 until i-cord measures 30cm, leaving all sts on the needle for joining.

JOINING I-CORD TO HAT

With RS of hat facing, starting at the rib of the left side, *with the left end of the

DPN holding the i-cord, pick up first st from hat, wrap yarn around back of i-cord, knit 2 sts from i-cord, then ktog the last st of i-cord with the picked up stitch from hat; rep from * across bottom edge of hat, missing every 3rd row of the side and every 3rd st from the base. When you reach the end cont working i-cord for 30cm.

Break yarn and fasten off.

HOW TO USE OUR CHARTS

Start at the bottom right-hand corner. Read right side rows from right to left and wrong side rows from left to right. A row of squares represents a row of knitting.
