KID’S HAT AND SCARF SET

HAT

Cast on 64 (76: 88) sts using size 4.5mm needles and Yarn A. Work in 2x2 rib for 12 (16: 20) rows.

Change to 5mm needles.

Row 1 (RS) Knit, inc 2 (1: 0) sts evenly across row. [66 (77: 88) sts]

Cont in st st, work stripes as foll:

Work 6 rows using Yarn A

Work 6 rows using Yarn B.

Cont as set until piece meas 12 (14: 16)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.

SHAPE CROWN (FOR ALL SIZES)

Cont working stripe patt as set, shape crown as foll:

Row 1 *K9, skpo; rep to end. [60 (70: 80) sts]

Next and all WS rows Purl.

Row 3 *K8, skpo; rep from * to end. [54 (63: 72) sts]

Row 5 *K7, skpo; rep from * to end. [48 (56: 64) sts]

Row 7 *K6, skpo; rep from * to end. [42 (49: 56) sts]

Row 9 *K5, skpo; rep from * to end. [36 (42: 48) sts]

Row 11 *K4, skpo; rep from * to end. [30 (35: 40) sts]

Row 13 *K3, skpo; rep from * to end. [24 (28: 32) sts]

Row 15 *K2, skpo; rep from * to end. [18 (21: 24] sts]

Row 17 *K1, skpo; rep from * to end. [12 (14: 16) sts]

Next row Purl.

Next row *K2tog; rep from * to end. [6 (7: 8) sts]

Break yarn and thread through sts on needle, draw up and secure. Sew side seam matching stripes. Turn back brim if desired. Using Yarn C, make a pompom (see page 23 for a tutorial) and sew firmly to top of the hat.

SCARF

Note Cut yarn at end of each stripe and join in next colour.

Cast on 46 (46: 56) sts using 5mm needles and Yarn A. Row 1 *K1, sl1 wyif; rep from * to end.

Repeat the last row another 15 times.

Change to Yarn B and work Row 1 another 16 times.

Continue in stripes as set until scarf measures required length. Cast off firmly and weave in ends.

Using Yarn A, measure and cut strands of yarn approx 40cm long. Take three strands at a time and knot into a fringe on either ends of the scarf. Trim ends of fringe to neaten.
