PHOTO FRAME

-

Note The frame used for this project was 12.5 x 20.3cm with a 3.5cm deep border. Depending on the size and depth of your frame you may need to adjust the amount of stitches you cast on, and the final length of your frame cover.

The cover is knitted in a large rectangle, which will then form a tube around the edges of the frame. It is secured with mattress stitch at the back. Your cast-on edge needs to be wide enough to fit snugly around one border edge of the frame.

FRAME COVER

Cast on 18 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn A.

Work in st st until piece meas approx 26cm, or enough to cover all four sides of your frame snugly.

Cast off.

Remove the glass and backing from the frame, and with WS facing, starting at the top right-hand corner, wrap your cover around the frame, mattress stitching the row-end edges together with matching yarn and a tapestry needle. Finally, mattress stitch the cast-on and cast-off edges together.

STEM (I-CORD)

Cast on 2 sts using 3mm DPNs and Yarn B.

Knit into the back of all the stitches.

Without turning the needle, *push the stitches to the RH side of the needle, pull the yarn firmly across the back of the stitches and K to the end. **

Repeat from * to ** until you have a 50cm length of i-cord.

BIG FLOWER (I-CORD)

Cast on 3 sts using 3mm DPNs and Yarn C.

Work i-cord as before until you have a 40cm length of i-cord.

*Loop 8cm of i-cord into a petal shape and secure in place with cotton thread. Repeat from * until 5 petals have been created. Secure the i-cord end in place neatly.

SMALL FLOWER (I-CORD)

Cast on 3 sts using 3mm DPNs and Yarn D.

Work i-cord as before until you have a 30cm length of i-cord.

*Loop 6cm of i-cord into a petal shape and secure in place with cotton thread. Repeat from * until 5 petals have been created. Secure the i-cord end in place neatly.

MAKING UP

Attach one end of the Stem i-cord to the top-left corner of your Frame Cover. Creating four looped leaves as you work, using picture as a guide, stitch the Stem i-cord in place down one side of your frame and along the bottom using a tapestry needle and Yarn B. Overlay the Small Flower on top of the Big Flower and secure in place in the middle, then attach this double flower to the top of the stem. Replace glass and backing.
