NRL and AFL fans may be treated to seeing their first matches in 4K resolution when the 2019 season kicks off in a few short months.

Fox Sports already provides worldclass coverage of each of these popular Australian winter codes and it intends to take it to the next level when matches are beamed via satellite into customers’ homes in 4K ultra HD clarity.

Foxtel will be taking its experiences and learnings from covering the Bathurst 1000 and the Australian summer of cricket and applying that to selected NRL and AFL matches next season.

NRL and AFL coverage includes multiple camera placements around the stadium and now, with 4K, that workflow will change completely.

“Our internal workflow has changed as well adding a 4K UHD layer of storage and edit to our HD facility plant which now includes 16 channels of audio (up from 8) as we are

providing surround sound on all our UHD broadcasts as well,” says Todd Procter, Head of Innovations and OB Special Events, Fox Sports.

Fox Sports will use the same Fujinon 4K UA80 lenses used on Sony HDC4800 cameras which provided the 4K coverage at the Bathurst 1000.

“As you would expect every sporting code has different cameras, lens requirements and placements which are independent from whether coverage is in 4K UHD or in High Definition,” Procter said.

“We decide on camera numbers and placements depending on the scale and how our production teams would like to tell the stories in the events.

“NEP Australia has been a great partner to deliver our 4K UHD facilities and another Fox Sports first - native 4K replays.”

In the NRL, the broadcaster’s cameras are used to supply the feeds for the Bunker.

Now in 4K, the streams will be a lot clearer and allow for more precision when looking to make a call on a contentious decision.

As part of the Fox Sports preparation for the 4K cricket coverage, it conducted 4K UHD tests at various NRL and AFL matches.

So what can we expect to see in the 2019 NRL and AFL coverage?

“I’m sure there will be conversations with our other sporting partners on 4K coverage and I suspect a strong customer take up will drive this decision.”

In the NRL, FOX SPORTS is the host broadcaster of several matches and cobroadcaster with Channel 9 on others.

NRL fans should get excited, because FOX SPORTS intends to show selected host broadcast matches in 4K.
