We take a look at the big end of town TV’s where processing really counts

-

While being able to roll out of sight is the most eye-catching feature of the ZX, what really makes this TV stand out is the new α9 Gen 3 processor, which heightens viewers’ sense of immersion via new features designed to optimise a wide range of content through AI 8K up-scaling.

On the sound front, the processor has AI Sound Pro to sharpen voices, with virtual 5.1 surround sound.

This works alongside Dolby Vision IQ, which intelligently adjusts the picture for content and lighting conditions.

With a 100Hz refresh rate, viewers can track fast-paced action in outstanding detail. It has a High Frame Rate (HFR) of 120 frames per second.

Its Sport Alert feature sends notifications about key moments and live scores before, during and after games for sports like Premier League, NBA and NFL.

What really makes this TV stunning, of course, is the 8K OLED resolution. The ZX offers 33 million self-emitting pixels, equivalent to 16 times the number of pixels in an FHD TV and four times that of 4K UHD. The result is a brighter display with starker contrasts.

The ZX can play native 8K content, though filming content in 8K is still in its infancy. In March LG filmed the first Tottenham Hotspur Premier League football match in 8K, showcasing the stunning detail of its 8K TVs.

Until there is more 8K content, viewers will still be able to enjoy upscaled 8K content, made possible through the Alpha 9 Gen3 processor. 8K content is also available on the built-in YouTube app, which offers 8K playback support.

A key difference between LG’s 2019 and 2020 8K OLED TVs is the expanded integration with apps, such as Apple TV, Disney+, Netflix, FreeviewPlus, Amazon Prime, Foxtel, and Optus Sports. LG has also added Amazon Alexa (Google Assistant already worked with LG’s 8K OLED models).

From the built-in LG ThinQ AI technology, users can make direct voice commands. Launched in 2017,

LG is continually improving its usability. Now, users can make more natural commands, such as “make the TV louder”, or “sound is too quiet”.

It supports Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, enabling users to share or mirror content from their compatible iPhone, iPad or Mac directly to their LG TV.

LG’s 2020 OLED TVs support Dolby Atmos sound, industry-leading audio technology that creates an immersive entertainment experience by isolating the relative location of each sound to generate rich and multi-dimensional audio.

The ZX is a top-performer when it comes to gaming. It is one of the first TVs on the market to support NVIDIA G-SYNC integration, which is key for clearer, smoother games with less stutter, lag, and flicker.

In addition, it adapts the TV’s refresh rate to the frame rate of the connected gaming hardware. It also supports HDMI 2.1, making LG the only TV brand offering compatibility with a wide variety of gaming devices such as graphics cards and gaming consoles.
