Nothing stops Jean weighing in on strange goings-on

Blake’s NEAREST & DEAREST Jean Blake

( NADINE GARNER) For Jean, beloved housekeeperturned-wife of Lucien, life forever altered when he just dropped out of sight two years after they were married. Raising her two kids on her own, Jean now relies on the strength that helped her through the losses she endured in World War II. Far worse, there’s been no trace of her husband after he went AWOL chasing a killer. Always pragmatic, Jean’s determined to forge on, using her fount of historic local knowledge, and her position as a newly elected shire councillor to follow in Lucien’s bold footsteps as an amateur, capeless crime-fighter!

Chief Superintendent Matthew Lawson

( JOEL TOBECK) Ballarat’s police chief was relying on his sergeant Charlie Parks to succeed him as top cop in Ballarat, but he’s now a detective in Melbourne. It was a loss that shocked Matthew, set to reel again as his “brother” Lucien vanished! The biggest effect of these losses is that Charlie now plays protector for Jean – and what’s more worrying is that she’s now playing detective! It could all go badly wrong and get her killed! He has to make best of a bad situation but at least he’s got Alice to rely on, now she’s Ballarat’s police surgeon. They’re good friends – and perhaps they could be much more…

Doctor Alice Harvey

( BELINDA MCCLORY) Working in the police morgue has always brought out the best of Alice’s self-confidence and capabilities, but the potentiality of falling in love with Matthew has caught her unawares. He’s made her a little nervous by hesitating to profess his love; and that’s worried her even more because she fears people will think he hired her to take over from Lucien because he loves her! Lucien’s loss also gives Alice the rare opportunity to interact with living people instead of just corpses, something which is anathema to her! But with Jean’s knowledge of romance and life, Alice hopes to turn her life around. And in exchange, she’ll trade her dark secrets to help Jean catch the crooks!

Senior Sergeant Bill Hobart

( DAVID WHITELEY) Slowly ingratiating himself year-on-year with the Blake family, Bill remains Matthew’s conduit at the station but, over time, recent transgressions like attacking suspected homosexuals has besmirched Bill’s character, ensuring he won’t inherit Matthew’s mantle as Ballarat’s Chief Super!

Cec Drury

( IAN ROONEY) Like Jean, Cec is only other local who knows the ins and outs of Ballarat. As Lucien’s longtime friend, he’s willing to break or bend a few rules for Blake’s widow, even allowing Jean a membership into the Old Colonists’ male-only club. He’ll give her a shoulder to cry on, an ear whenever she needs it and a drink when she wants one. If that helps Jean catch some criminals, the better for it.

THE BLAKE MYSTERIES: GHOST STORIES NOW AIRING ON SEVEN Jean (Nadine Garner) considers herself an unofficial crimebuster!
