AMID THE INTENSE SECRECY OVER TED’S DEATH IN AFGHANISTAN, PRIVATE Jarrod Vogel MAY BE THE ONE TO UNLOCK THE MYSTERY
Young Jarrod may hold the clue to his CO’s demise
Loneliness and isolation have long defined 19-year-old Private Jarrod Vogel’s life. Raised in the well-heeled surrounds of Sydney’s North Shore as the pampered son of a doctor mother and lawyer father, and with an older brother in Europe, Jarrod’s much spent much of his life on his own. Fresh out of school, he was a little intense and was expected to make conservative choices in life, including going to university. Instead, he opted to join the army. Even with the company of the others in his platoon, Jarrod still felt like a square peg shoved into a round hole.
Returning home from Afghanistan in the wake of Ted’s (Ewen Leslie) death, Jarrod (George Pullar) returns to a world and a lifestyle that’s radically different from his comrades’. Clearly, his platoon leader’s death has affected him, but as he works through his grief over the incident, he slowly realises there’s much more to what happened than he initially thought.
“He was the one wearing helmet [camera] footage during Ted’s death in Afghanistan, and for other reasons he ends up going back to that footage and seeing something he’s missed, and he becomes suspicious of the motivations behind Ted’s death,” George says.
Believing that another member of the team just might’ve had something to do with it, Jarrod begins investigating his suspicions but struggles to convince people of what he thinks is the truth. In doing so, his frustrations mount because his need to do the right thing is clouded by others’ constant doubts over the information he’s unearthing.
“He finds himself in a position where he doesn’t belong anywhere. He’s got his old mates at home he doesn’t really fit in with, his new army mates don’t want him speaking out, so he ends up feeling quite lonely and isolated,” George explains.
On a one-man mission to expose the facts behind the tragedy and the apparent cover-up shrouding it, Jarrod knows he’ll have to rely on his strong convictions to get the answers he wants – and the justice that Ted deserves so he can rest in peace.
