New CBD sealing the future for Sunshine Coast
Project reaches major milestone as streets, cycleways and urban square start to take shape during stage one of project
THE new Maroochydore CBD is helping to shape the Sunshine Coast’s future.
New streets, cycle paths, walkways and an urban square are starting to take shape, breathing life into the heart of the region.
An important milestone for the project was reached this month, with Mayor Mark Jamieson unveiling the street names for the first stage. The names acknowledge elements of our past, present and bright future, including Festival Parade, Lightning Lane, Future Way, Sunshine Coast Parade, Mundoo Boulevard, Gaba Lane, South Sea Islander Way, Market Lane, Fairway Drive, Red Bill Lane and First Avenue.
“We have come a long way since the first asphalt was poured on site back in April,’’ SunCentral CEO John Knaggs said.
“Our kerb and channelling in stage one is nearing completion and some of the street signs are being installed.
“We have also installed the framework for striking new shelter structures that will be a distinctive feature of the shaded pedestrian areas in the new CBD.”
With infrastructure now coming out of the ground and becoming very visable, it’s important those tasked with the responsibility of developing the 53ha greenfield CBD site get it right.
Mr Knaggs is excited by the challenge and points to the generations who will benefit from the jobs created on such a prime site. A game-changer for future generations with the Sunshine Coast inevitably headed for a population of 500,000.
“This will create 15,000 long-term jobs directly as a contemporary new CBD when it comes out of the ground.
“It gives a long-term impetus to the Sunshine Coast.
“It is incredibly rewarding to see this vision become a reality. Before we know it the Maroochydore CBD will become the thriving, welcoming city heart it was intended to be.“
