Some references...

We have two main current references in the noise-cancelling market —

Bose’s QC25 at $399, and PSB Speakers M4U 2 at $499. Both models have won multiple Sound+Image awards, the Bose for a combination of comfort, impressive NC and solid sound quality, the PSBs first and foremost for their sound quality — these offer three modes: passive, active and active with NC. They are, however, fairly large headphones; we only once took them aloft, as you have trouble turning your head even slightly to tell the nice lady whether you want beef or chicken, while tucking them in the seat pocket while you eat would be a challenge indeed. But their sound quality is second to none at this price, a real reference. We should also mention another Sound+Image award winner, the W Symphony headphones from Definitive Technology (pictured below) — which are our current Headphones of the Year over $500. They’re priced at $749, but they offer the triple joys of Bluetooth wireless use, noise cancelling operation and a great sound. And if you’d like to consider in-ear designs which offer noise-cancelling, (there’s a significant benefit on flights when turning your head to sleep), don’t ignore the excellent Bose QC20 design ($399, right), also a Sound+Image award winner.
