It’s no great eye opener to learn that Jan James once played Janis Joplin in a Chicago stage show. But even without the jukebox hits at her disposal, the Michigan native’s smoky, solicitous belt is something to hear. Streaked with stormy wah-wah guitar, Justify is warlike and wounded, while the irrepressible Lucky UR is a flayed-throat invitation to dance with her in the shit storm.
