NAD M2 Direct Digital

Sound+Image - - Second Decade -

Not only a superb amplifier by any standards, but one that brought the hi-fi world closer to accepting ‘digital’ amplification, or clever variants of that ilk at any rate, back in a time when audiophiles were greeting digital amps with not so much a raised eyebrow as a raised cross. Developing a fully digital circuit architecture from Zetex (now Diode Zetex), NAD delivered its first ‘Direct Digital’ amplifier, “essentially a computercontrolled DAC which amplifies”, with digital feedback accurately correcting timing errors in the pulses every 10 nanoseconds, this “reinvented feedback”, as the engineers put it, delivering closed loop digital amplification. While NAD now seems to favour Hypex’s Hybrid Digital UcD (Universal Class-D) and nCore ‘digital’ amplification, it’s for this initial bravery and success under fire, and for the impetus it brought to N.A.D.’s Masters series, that the M2 joins our Sound+Image Ultimate 30.
