‘Best Buy’ Television of the Year

“Solid picture performance and Android smarts combine in this attractive Ultra-HD Android 65-incher available at a street price that represents outstanding value.”

Competition is wildly intense at the value end of the television market, and you may be surprised to find a Japanese brand winning here over Korean or Chinese offerings. Yet Toshiba has returned to the Australian market with a range of smart Ultra High Definition models, among which this 65-incher impressed us with its combination of picture quality, aesthetic design and remarkable given the value-for-money pricing — good smart stuff from its Android 6.0.1 interface and support for voice interaction through Google’s Voice Assistant.

There are three HDMI inputs, plus support for composite video and audio, two USB sockets, and stereo audio outputs as both analogue and digital optical, in addition to the thin soundbarstyle speakers between the two sturdy yet attractive chrome-plated legs. Bluetooth is supported both for input devices and to connect external speakers, and of course the Android interface includes access to apps for Netflix, Stan and other streaming services, as well as the ability to receive casts to its built-in Chromecast receiver. You network the TV using with the dual-band Wi-Fi or, if you can, Ethernet.

Although you benefit from the razorsharp 4K resolution, this TV doesn’t support High Dynamic Range (HDR) signals, nor the most advanced colour standards. But at this price, we’re suspicious of TVs that claim to do so (“HDR-compatible” does not necessarily mean HDR-capable, and screens at this price rarely have either the nits or the processing to deliver effective HDR). Instead Toshiba’s CEVO (née Regza) 4K engine and other processing delivers 10-bit colour remapping for improved colour graduations between shades, while the overall picture was wonderfully bright and bold, the LED local dimming very effective.

This 65-inch has an RRP of $2499, but as we go to press it’s available for $1595. For an Android 4K TV of these abilities, that is most certainly a ‘Best Buy’.
