Can you believe it's been 20 years since children's group, Hi-5 first danced and sung their way onto our TV screens? Original member Nathan Foley looks back on his time with the group with fond memories. In their chat, Nathan shares with Matt Collins how he got started with the group and what a former fan said to him in Bunnings recently. But what is everyone's favourite Hi-5 member up to these days?

MATT COLLINS: How did you get started with Hi-5?

NATHAN FOLEY: I used to sing to the old people in the nursing homes with my little ghetto-blaster and my cassette tape.

MC: Showing your age there Nathan.

NF: Haha, yeah I know. So by the time I left school, I found out they were auditioning people in the ABC studios for a new children’s group. It’s funny because they put all the hundreds of people into groups of five and my group ended up being all the original Hi-5 members.

MC: You were all selected to be in the group?

NF: Yeah, the whole group made it.

MC: Tell me about some of the fonder memories you have of your time with Hi-5.

NF: It’s funny, I had a guy come up to me in Bunnings recently. He was a big guy, he had a massive beard, probably 6’10. He was a big, scary dude and he goes, “I used to watch you as a kid”. It was weird but, looking back, we made much more of an impact than we thought and we obviously inspired a lot of kids.

MC: You mentioned family before when talking about Hi-5. Like any family, they have their ups and downs. Was there many fights between the five of you?

NF: We were living in each other’s pockets every day so, of course, you are going to have your ups and downs. But I can’t think of one occasion where we ever had a big blow-up.

MC: How has Hi-5 helped you now that you’re performing to adult audiences?

NF: Where it has helped me is with the stamina to go out there and do what I do. When we were doing Hi-5, we were filming about four months a year, working 14–17 hours a day and then we’d hit the road.

MC: What is the biggest differences between children and adult audiences?

NF: Every audience member has an opinion. When it comes to children, they were very honest in a different way. They just wanted to be entertained and you have to be on the mark every time and you have to give them the most energy possible. MC: What takes up most of your time these days? NF: I perform on cruise ships most of the year. I spend more time on water than on land.
