Region pushes for fire centre

South Western Times - - News -

Donnybrook-Balingup shire president Brian Piesse believes the Rural Fire Division’s Centre of Excellence would be ideally located within his borders.

Mr Piesse said he believed that geographically and demographically a location within the shire’s footprint of natural bushland and State forests ticks most of the boxes in terms of satisfying the terms of reference and scope of works detailed in the Expression of Interest document.

“There is no doubt that our various well located, experienced and highly awarded local fire brigades would add real hands-on value and functionality to the proposed Centre of Excellence,” he said.

“It would also bring with it a significant boost to the local population, retail demand and related business activity.

“The shire has demonstrated its preparedness to work with DFES in terms of fire mitigation strategies as demonstrated recently when a site within the shire was chosen by the Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, the Hon Fran Logan MLA, to announce the release of a $3.3 million tranche of State funding for fire mitigation purposes, of which the shire received a further $275k for the current financial year.”
